UCSD admitting more and more students that need remedial math

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
The chart coincides with COVID learning loss. I also think a secondary factor at play is how math is taught these days.

Many teachers use online math assignments. This is bad for multiple reasons. First, it's scientifically shown that writing things down on paper helps it stick in your head better. The old fashioned way of writing math problems out by hand from a text book or worksheet is the better way to learn, especially for kids who aren't strong in math to begin with. But of course, this is not as convenient for the teacher that has to grade all of those assignments.

But perhaps even worse, online assignments facilitate copy-and-pasting into ChatGPT so you don't actually have to do the work and can still get a good grade. (This is called the IHO method of learning math.)

"it’s not because high school students are getting dumber by the way

the real reason is uncomfortable"

No capital letters or punctuation. Maybe high school students actually are getting dumber.

The UC’s have a test free admissions policy, which means they no longer look at SAT and ACT scores. This started with Fall 2021 admissions. I think the data shows they need to bring back that requirement. I attached a screenshot of some of the sample questions. This isn’t Covid learning loss, this is basic math.
