The worst one I was old enough to remember was 1990. Serious times, but I don't recall the president saying "this sucker is going down".
 
I remember the 1970s. Not because I was working but because my parents were and they talked around the dinner table. Was Dad going to go on strike, what would they do. Gas lines. Inflation. Need to stretch the groceries. Stressful times in the parents lives and even the kindergartener could pick it up.

I remember the same. The union broke up, my dad's pay dropped in half and we lost our health insurance for a time. His pension after all of those years is now $300 a month.

It's funny, I was sitting in the Pub the other night with two other British Guys in my age group and we were talking about how traumatised everyone who has never lived through times like this and were reminiscing about how we grew up - in times like this, how, at the end of the week, if you had enough money for a few Pints at the Local Pub you thought you were rich, if you had a job you were a local Celebrity...

I started my working life at Chrysler UK at this very Plant in 1972, luckily I managed to make it through College and my training before the end of Chrysler UK...we finished up with thousands of unsold Cars sitting in Fields..in Fact, that was around the time a local Band called The Specials came out with Ghost Town .

But we were sitting there saying that we did it once without even realizing it so we can do it again, it will just be kinda normal for us.

I wrote in a previous post a few weeks ago something like that when we come out the other side everyone will realize that we don't need all this "stuff", we will all be happy working a 35-40 hr week, we won't spend our whole lives trying to keep up with the Jones's, instead, we will be more compassionate and sympathetic towards each other....

There are only 3 ways to create real wealth and they are Manufacturing, Mining and Agriculture.

For me, the quicker we race to the bottom, the better.

While I understand that it can be a cosmic experience, I think lm was referring to the creation of the universe and not tenmagnet's pet name for a date with his hand.

For once people in this country will feel what people in other countries have gone trough most of their lives, eternal economic crisis, it doesn't matter how hard you work or how smart you are, just because you live in an under developed economy, you are taken down too. A humbling lesson for arrogant countries.

Going through a crisis can humble the most arrogant types. Honestly, when the dust settles and we get back to more normalcy people will be more down-to-earth and humble. I still remember when my grandfather used to tell me about his life in Poland during WWII as a young adult. He used to help jewish children escape to Spain and Switerland with his brother (one of which was caught and executed). Even if it does get as bad as it got during the Great Depression, it will still be a hell of a lot better than having to live through a world war. Adversity and tough times can bring out the worst or the best in people in terms of character...let's hope that it brings out the best in most people.
