Happy Cinco de Mayo, Qwerty.

People often confuse Cinco de Mayo with Mexican Independence Day which it is not. That's in September. According to Wikipedia here is the definition of CdM:

"It originated with Mexican-American communities in the American West as a way to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War and today the date is observed in the United States as a celebration of Thanks to Mexico in fending off the would be French invasion of the U.S."

So, thank you to you Mexicans. My ancestors first arrived here in the new world in 1629, with most of them coming over on the Winthrop Fleet which was a voyage from England to New England a year later in 1630. (I'm a FOB!) A couple hundred years later, it looks like Great^15-Grandpa Qwerchete literally protected Great^15 Grandma SoCal. The French wanted to break up the union during the civil war. My family fought in the Civil War for the north side and you guys helped stave off the French. We love you Mexicans.

That's not true, here's real story:

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Kraft mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York.

This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost.

The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise and eagerly awaited its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day.

The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.

For qwerchete (and most everyone else), it's Drinko De Mayo.

Regarded as a celebration of Mexican culture and Hispanic heritage, Cinco de Mayo is a much bigger holiday in the US than it is in Mexico. Cities with a large Mexican population, such as Los Angeles, Houston and Chicago, hold parades and traditional Mexican music."
