LA man upset over job kills wife, 5 kids, himself

By THOMAS WATKINS ? 1 hour ago

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A father apparently distraught over job problems fatally shot his wife, five young children and himself at their harbor-area home Tuesday.

Shortly before the killings, the man faxed a letter to a TV station claiming that he and his wife had been fired from jobs as medical technicians and she suggested they kill themselves and their children, too.

"Why leave the children to a stranger?" the man wrote, according to KABC-TV.

KABC reported that the man claimed in the fax that an administrator rebuffed them when they showed up to work, told them to file a union grievance and said, "You should have blown your brains out."

The man wrote that they filed a grievance but nothing was done and two days later they were fired, KABC said.

"They did nothing to the manager who started such and did not attempt to assist us in the matter, knowing we have no job and five children under 8 years old with no place to go. So here we are," the note said.

At the bottom of the note, the man wrote, "Oh lord, my God, is there no hope for a widow's son?"

The note said the couple worked at Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center, but police said they were trying to confirm that. A message seeking comment from the medical center was not immediately returned.

The family was not immediately identified. Police said the child victims were an 8-year-old girl, twin 5-year-old girls and twin 2-year-old boys. It was the third mass slaying of a family in Southern California since fall.

"Today our worst fear was realized," said Deputy Chief Kenneth Garner. "It's just not a solution. There's just so many ways you find alternatives to doing something so horrific and drastic as this."

Police described the fax but did not release the detail reported by the KABC.

"He was going through some critical situation at the job, that's what he described in that two-page letter, ongoing problems at the job, and that's what prompted him to take his own life and his family, from what was said in the fax letter," Garner said.

The TV station called police after receiving the fax, and a police communications center also received a call from a man who stated, "'I just returned home and my whole family's been shot,'" Garner said.

"There is a disconnect but we believe our suspect is the one who called," Garner said.

Officers rushed to the two-story home in Wilmington, near the Port of Los Angeles, shortly before 8:30 a.m., apparently within minutes of the killings. Garner said the officers could still smell the gunshot residue.

Although the fax asserted that the woman was involved, police Lt. John Romero said, "It is apparent that the suspect in the murder is the male adult."

The two-story home, much larger than its one-story neighbors, sits in front of a railroad track in Wilmington, a community about 18 miles south of downtown. A children's playset stood in the backyard.

On Dec. 24, a man dressed up as Santa Claus invaded a Christmas Eve party at his ex-wife's parents' home in suburban Covina. His ex-wire and eight of her relatives died from gunshots or in the house fire he set. The man later killed himself.

In October, an unemployed financial manager despairing over extreme money problems shot and killed his wife, three children, mother-in-law and himself in their home in the Porter Ranch area of the San Fernando Valley.

I never quite understand why parents that are in financial distress take it out on their innocent children. As if they truly believe killing them will do them better than leaving them as orphans. It's getting ugly out there.

What a sad and selfish move. Amazing that people become so attached to their lifestyle and *stuff* that they can't live (literally) without them.

My wife just asked me the other day what we would do if we both lost our jobs, and could not find something that paid as well. I was like "What can you do? Find a lower paying job and file BK if its not enough to cover our obligations --- and move somewhere cheaper like AV or Ladera". While I would not be proud of a personal financial failure and certainly wish I did not have assorted debts that require a certain level income to maintain, it is what it is. Easy come, easy go --- It's just stuff.

In this bailout society I find it very hard to imagine how anyone would be so ashamed of a personal financial failure brought on by a job loss that they feel the only option is taking themselves and everyone they supposedly love six feet deep.

It is selfish, I am working very hard to help my wife and myself, but its not going to fix itself soon. What I don't like is what is stated in my other thread. We get bosses who are insensitive to the situtation and are just jerks. Do you not believe people can be pushed too far?

I myself have been close to something like this. A guy was working at a large aerospace firm (Boeing), he worked there for 24 years and was getting set to retire (6 months). They let him go as a cost saving measure. This guy had essentially given up his family and health to work and that was taken from him. I sat right across from the office he was let go. Both managers were douchebags, but they certainly did not deserve being killed. I was at lunch when he came back and shot both of them 3 times (and himself - 44 mag.). Still, there is always hope, they could have survived for a few more months before anything happened. They could have even played the system and been in much better shape. Anyways good luck

Having 5 kids in 8 years tells me that rational thought, planning, and foresight were not the strongest attributes of this couple. There was a rash of these kinds of mass killing in Oregon earlier this decade, where the father kills everyone and then commits suicide. The theory then was that the men felt that since they could no longer provide for the family, it was more merciful to kill them than to force them to suffer through poverty. I imagine this particular family had also probably been living on the edge of financial collapse for years; no telling what that kind of impending doom can do to one's mental condition.

You don't understand it because you are not a certified nutter (no offense Cakes) whack-job as this dude obviously was...

Wish he would have survived the suicide attempt. I'd go find him and finish the job the right way.

Here's the family:

the letter to KABC said an adminsistratior at the hospital told him "you should not even have bothered to come to work today. You should have blown your brains out". I wonder if he feels a little guilty.

I read earlier that they had 2 sets of twins, so 3 pregnancies. That couldn't have been easy on the mind either.

I know what the letter said, but I have trouble believing that both mother and father would agree that everyone should die.

Terrible. Just terrible.

Terrible Tragedy. God help their souls.

Whoever that Kaiser Admin. that said "you would be better off

blowing your brains out" is in a world of hurt.

It likely never happened. I don't believe it.

I believe it, but I believe it was probably taken out of context and not meant literally. Just like people on online forums sometimes say things like "go kill yourself".

No, when somebody writes that on the internet, I'm pretty sure they mean it. At least I do.

I'm not sure I believe it either. This guy was clearly a liar and an idiot.

Even if some random administrator did say this the correct response is a PG-rated version of "F#%$* off" and getting on with your life. You lost your job - big frigging deal. It's a miracle he survived long enough to reach 40 yrs of age being so thin-skinned. The man spelled his employers name wrong three times in his suicide letter. Crap, I'd fire him for that alone.

I never thought about the importance of spell checking a suicide note before ?

Kind of like dressing up before you put the bullet in your head ?

Or brushing the kids teeth before you off them ?

The man was obviously depressed. This could be viewed as medical condition ?

Unless your Tom Cruise and spaced out on reading L Ron.

speaking of spell check, I sure butchered the word "administrator" in my first comment. As a product of the IUSD, I can assure you that my spelling is atrocious.

Nope! Standard bitter homedebtor.

Lupoe and his 38-year-old wife both were recently fired from their jobs as hospital technicians at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center West Los Angeles. They had lied about their income to try to get cheaper child care, Cortez said.

"They were terminated because in the health care field, records are an important part of the process, and people trust us with their health," Kaiser Permanente spokeswoman Diana Bonta told the Los Angeles Times.

You gotta wonder what else they were lying about. SISA anyone?

(CNN) -- A family of four has been found dead in a suburban Columbus, Ohio, home in what's believed to be a murder-suicide, authorities said Thursday.

Police tape surrounds a Whitehall, Ohio, house, where a family of four was found dead Wednesday.

Police in Whitehall, east of Columbus, responded to a call around 2 p.m. Wednesday and found the bodies of Mark Meeks, 51; his wife, Jennifer Dallas-Meeks, 40; and children Jimmy, 5, and Abbigail, 8.

"We're confirming all four victims had gunshot wounds, and a gun was found at the scene," Sgt. Dan Kelso said.

A suicide note purportedly written by Meeks also was found at the scene, but police are not releasing the note's contents, Kelso said.

Authorities believe Meeks shot his wife and two children and then himself, Kelso said.

It was the second time this week that a family died in an apparent murder-suicide. On Tuesday, the bodies of Ervin Antonio Lupoe, his wife and five children were found in their Los Angeles, California, area home after Lupoe faxed a letter to a local television station explaining that he and his wife had lost their jobs and felt it was better to end their lives.

Police resisted the suggestion that the killings were motivated by finances or job loss.

"Out of respect for the family, detectives are not releasing the actual motive, but it's not financial, and he was employed," Kelso said.

The vice president of operations at Immke Northwest Honda, where Meeks was a service manager, confirmed that he was a current employee.

"We as a dealership decline to comment on this devastating tragedy, except to say that all of us here at Immke Northwest Honda are very sad and our condolences go out to the family," Tom Spicer said.

Meeks' brother said the family was struggling to come to terms with the possibility that his older brother -- a lifelong car buff and devoted family man who adored his wife and children -- could be responsible for their deaths.

"They were just great people, and they seemed to be an extremely close family," Mike Meeks said. "I like to say they were so close they were mushy; they showed affection toward each other and their kids."

Meeks said that he last saw his brother about three weeks ago when he came by to pick up firewood and that he seemed happy, giving no clue that anything was amiss.

"There was no indication of anything like this coming. Nothing," the brother said. "I think that's why everyone's feeling a sense of shock."
