The Vault Bar & Grill in Pasadena (American kobe burger)

After a run to K-Town for lunch last weekend, I went to visit some friends in Pasadena. They insisted on going to a "nice place" (translation: restaurants with valet parking) but all the places they called nearby were booked. We ended up going to "The Vault", because, they say the place is rarely full. That kind of statement usually sends alarm bells off in my head, but since I'm on their turf, I'll defer to their decision and see how good or bad the food could be -- this restaurant seems to get trashed on yelp.

So there I was, glancing through the menu thinking, ho-hum... then I spotted a $9 American kobe beef burger (+$1 for cheese). I usually pay ~$14 (?) for one at Opah's. It'd seem strange to go to a "fine dining" place and order a burger, but what the heck. I ordered the burger medium rare and it came just the way I liked it. Nice, plump, and juicy. I regret not taking a picture (you're seeing a photo from someone else on biggestmenu web site below). The appetizers and sides weren't impressive... but that burger hit the spot right on. At Opahs sometimes I have to get them to take the burger back because it's over-cooked. This one was just right. However they use standard french fries, which isn't as good as Opah's shoe-string fries.

Note that the restaurant menu and the one online differs. They've also recently changed their desert selection (according to our waitress). I ordered the cheese cake and it tasted very much like the one served at Buca di Beppo, which is pretty good. With cheese cakes like these they need to be the right temperature to be nice and creamy, if the restaurant kept it too cold, it's not as good. So if you get one and it's kinda "solid", just let it sit on the table for a bit before eating it.
