The new Irvine high school

There was talk in another thread  that Woodbury feeds into Irvine high school. What do you guys think of the new Irvine high school that is going to be built in the great park? Does anyone have any information on which neighborhoods it will feed to? Or even when it will be ready? My feeling is that neighborhoods around Sand Canyon could fall into it, from Quail hill to portolla springs. I have absolutely no information and this is purely a guess as I'm thinking the new high school will probably take mostly from the newer communities where population growth is occuring and would take from all the other 4 high schools.

I am curious since we are considering buying in all these neighborhoods and I will have a high schooler in 10 years. I'm actually not sure if I should even think of the high school when making my decision.

I personally know a family similar to your situation and they bought in Woodbury East. High school is 10 years away from their oldest children; they are really anticipating 10 years from now they can send their kids to the new high school (one of the big reasons they bought there) instead of the dreaded Irvine HS.

Speaking of the villages that feed into Irvine HS.....if you blindfold someone and bring him to El Camino Real, College Park, Deerfield...etc and tell him he is in the city of Tustin or Santa Ana he will totally believe you. That's why I would not risk it and buy a house that's zoned for Irvine HS - why would I want my kids to go to the same school and be friend with people who come from those areas. It is like living in Santa Ana.

College Park has a really nice park. We go there on weekends sometimes with the kids.

We looked a few homes there and I can say the neighborhood has not aged well.

I think you're being sarcastic, but just in case you are not...a little diversity in school is GOOD for kids.

And let's not forget that "ghetto" Irvine High School has an API rating of 10.

10 years is very long time. Things can change. Yes right now Northwood HS has all the buzz and University High has a strong reputation. But take a look at the latest National Merit Finalists for OC (http://www.ocregister.com/news/named-349831-merit-national.html?data=1) and see which high schools they came from:
12 of 19 were from IUSD
--6 from NW High
--3 from University High
--3 from the "dreaded" Irvine High
--0 from Woodbridge High

Does that mean Woodbridge suck? Hell no. But these pseudo-rankings based on API, reputation, etc... are all in flux. Most of this depends on the student population and parental involvement. These will certainly change over the next decade.

So are Foothill and Santa Ana's OCHSA. There must be strong 10s and borderline 10s.

The converse of this... I believe the "suckier" API schools have better athletic programs.

At least 2 NBA players graduated from Woodbridge that I know of and Irvine High is known for its swim program.

Can you say Athletic Scholarship to Stanford  ;)
It would save a lot of money

Well if anyone made a purchase of home hoping for something that is listed as possible in 10 years
then they really made a bad decision.

That comment aside I have a feeling irvine high will improve in the near future because of the influx
of more FCB students from families that moved into new homes zoned to that school.

New Money FCBs children are IVC and UCI hopefuls. The lack of drive and motivation are already evident as the future generations downfall. Did you see the Chinese playboy student posted on an earlier link.

I can?t speak for other parents but for us
Stanford + Scholarship = Prayers Answered.
Keeping my fingers crossed?.Stanford water polo team :)

Well, I was looking for actual information if any one has it. But also to clarify my own opinion, I would like to buy a house which is zoned to University high school or Northwood high school and stays that way. I think that will keep the house popular in future as well.

And just to clarify again, if people are making deciosions to send their kids to the best available schools why would that mean they don't want their children to be with other races? These deciosions are not that extreme. I personally like a more vigorous highschool with more AP classes as I enjoyed this kind of high school while I was growing up.
I could definitely change my mind in a few years and wish for a less competative school fopr my children!

Not ending up at UCI (prayer answered)

High School bragging right is for sale. College bragging right is for sale too but most people can't afford to buy the school a wing.

I don't get this. Irvine residents are fearful of crime but yet many send their kids to USC to get shot at and especially the Newport crowd.

2 Chinese students were shot and killed recently a news bit that resonated global Asia, countless rapes occurred and frequent robberie place student on high alert. Being next to south central LA and you considered it being safer than next to BelAir's UCLA?

I am only raising this issue because I want to sound ignorant believing what I hear on TV and letting it dictate my perception.

USC is actually very safe. Ucla has a higher crime rate

Re:  Northwood High:

I heard a Korean mom say that some of the Korean families who were planning on sending their kids to Northwood High are changing their minds and sending their kids to Woodbridge.  I asked why, and she said that the Northwood High is too competitive and that it is starting to be known that the Korean kids going to Woodbridge are all getting A's.

I thought that was interesting...esp. because this is coming from the Korean families I know who have weekly tutors and/or after school educational schools for kids to help them with classwork and be ahead.  If these "competitive" families think that Northwood High is too competitive, it must really be competitive.

Most of you thinking your children are the brightest Don't be crying here when they are in HS and coming home with Bs and Cs. Your financial resources are spent at MR and HOAs and there is no money left for commercial and private tutoring. Here is what I know of the norm for kids getting As. Their families are spending on a average of $15,000 annually on tutorial expenses. Typically less during the academic year but a whopping $5k during the summer SAT or college exam prep courses. There are 105 tutoring businesses in Irvine not including the private ones operating from homes by word of mouth. There are only 4 florists in the entire city and 2 of them are mail order types and soon the remainders will become a Chase bank. Got to love this cites diversity.
