YES YOU CAN!!
Probably right near the top of your new years resolution list is to lose weight and get fitter, right? Imagine how good you'd feel if you could ride a Bike for 100 miles, it's not as hard as you think, it only takes about 6 weeks of training, the right Bike, something like this Felt - which you could probably pick up for around $750 along with a Helmet and apparel and you're all set, it's probably the equivalent to a years worth of Gym Fees that you're never gonna use. If you need advice on Bikes and equipment, PM me.
The nice thing about buying a purpose-built roadbike as opposed to a cheaper used one is that if you buy it from somewhere like Sand Canyon Cyclery they will actually fit the Bike to you, that will pay a premium down the road (pun not intended). Remember, the Bike should mould to you, not the other way around.
In reality, if you're in half decent shape, no real joint or back problems, you would have no problem starting to ride next week and completing the Tour-de-Palm Springs on Valentines Day.
If you feel you would like to give it a shot the 7C's IHB Cycling team will get you all trained up and ready to go!!
Here's a pretty decent site with a lot of good info on riding a Century (100 miles).
Here's a nice easy one to start with....
February 14th '09 Tour-de-Palm Springs
Then, if you keep going, this is a more challenging but gorgeous ride with Lots of Climbing...
May 9th '09 Cruisin' the Conejo
I will be adding more Centuries to the Calender as time goes by, so stay tuned !!!
