Termite Problem

After using the search button on this topic, I did not find any posts relating specifically to my question so hopefully the members here will have some advice for me. To make a long story short: we have a termite problem, confirmed by a pest-control company. To fumigate, the cost is around $2500 + additional if we wanted some of the wood to be replaced. I've also heard of other ways to deal with termites such as spot-treatment or some kind of foam-like substance that can be used that does not require one to move out of the house for 3-4 days. I'm wondering if anyone can advise me as to which method is best, advantages, disadvantages, etc. It's alot of money to fumigate but we can swallow that pill as long as we know that's the best/most long-lasting way to get rid of the termites.

We bought this house a year ago and the termite report indicated that it needed some spot treatment in the attic because he couldn't be sure if the droppings he found were recent. They are supposed to put some layer down so that when the next inspection is done and there are new droppings you can identify them. It had been tented in '05 before the last sale. When I spoke to the guy who did the termite inspection, he said that tenting is done when it's more severe. He said if you live within a few miles of the coast that you should have an inspection yearly and if you did so, you wouldn't have to tent.

Our house up in Paso had to be tented, but I don't know how long it had gone with termites. I imagine that the seller in early '06 took care of the termites, but if that is the case, then based on what this other guy told me, it shouldn't have needed to be tented 18 months later. ???

We had termites in my rental and the landlord had a guy come out and he said that they just needed to treat some holes in the ground. But then that didn't make sense because a termite guy at a house that was REALLY infested said the ground ones are the really bad ones. I was worried that our rental would need to be tented and in researching I read a few articles that indicated there were other ways to treat today, but they weren't less expensive, only more eco friendly. I would still see them even after this ground treatment and told the landlord several times, but he didn't seem concerned.

Do you trust the inspector who came out? It might be prudent to get another inspector for a second opinion.

This cost $3.95. Spread it over the infested wood members. It will not only kill termites it will also turn away bad neighbors.

Scarlette, it depends on what type of termites you have. Are they drywood or subterranean? Different kinds of termites respond to different kinds of treatment. For ex: putting holes in the ground won't do anything to drywood termites because they do not burrow into the soil. I suspect you are referring to drywood if it's the termite company that suggested tenting to you. Subterranean do not respond to tenting and drywood do not respond to baiting. If you look online you can read all about various kinds of treatment methods available. For me personally, tenting would be my last choice. Not only because of the cost, inconvenience, but also if you have a tile roof and you get some clown up there, you are risking cracking the tiles. You can try localization treatment but only if the infestation is not too great. Good luck.

Thanks, everyone, for your responses. Honestly, I have no idea what kind of termites they are. I will have to get a few other companies out to look at our place and see what the "consensus" is since I've only consulted 1 company. Also, I will definitiely do a little more research on the web to find alternatives to tenting. Interestingly, a few weeks after we noticed the termite problem, one of the houses in our neighborhood (just 5 houses away) was tented for fumigation. In a weird way, it made us feel a little better that we we were not the only ones with this problem.

Can anyone recommend a good termite treatment company? I just found a trail that leads from the ground into our stucco wall and after removing part of the wall, I found what people have described as subterranean termite tunnel.

What is the success rate of this method BK?

We had both types of termites when we lived in Laguna Niguel and used the following:

Newport Exterminating

blue, are you in woodbury? newport exterminating is used by some of the sub-associations in woodbury. if you're in one of them, they should give you a discount for using them for your priv residence. they might be contracted by some other villages as well - worth inquiring about.
