Tell me about Oceanside

Housing seems much cheaper there. What is the community like? It is just south of Camp Pendelton in Northern San Diego county. It seems you can get a place within walking distance to a beach for much less than around here. But I've never actually been there. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.
 
Very good fishing there, cleaner water than LA/OC and the lobsters/shellfish safer to eat, if you're into crabbing.

 
It's in middle of nowhere, and you're looking at a similar demographics as Escondido, Temecula, etc. The reason it is much less expensive is because it is about 45 miles from San Diego, and about 30 miles to S. OC. So it takes you forever to go anywhere.
 
<p>I LOVE ironsights. Everyonce in a while I'll bring the Barrett out to the military range and put a few rounds down range. </p>

<p>to me its very remote, but not exactly prime real estate. I would buy closer to the OC or to Carlsbad. Plus unless you are in the military, you are very much in the minority. I'd also look at the ability to resell a home. Then, OC would be a much better option.</p>

I'd move right next to San Onofre if DHS would let me. But you already know my risk tolerance to chemicals in drinking water, modern farming practices, reused sewage plant output, living next to freeways, AND my aversion to free range chickens because I don't think they are safe and they promote bird flu.



I think we may have different risk profiles. You don't gamble recreationally do you?

Spend a few weeks reading the local paper to get an idea what Oceanside is like. Like awgee said, there's a reason why it's one of the least expensive coastal cities.

<p>Then start playing poker. There's a fair ammount of luck in the game, but you have a monster edge over the field of otherwise donkey players - provided you go to the trouble to become a student of the game.</p>

<p>I refuse to play slots or any of the pit games. Craps and Blackjack is fun to play with a group, but you're still taking the worst of it. Still, if you're drinking and having a good time on the casino's nickle, what's the difference between losing at craps and playing a round of golf?</p>
 
Thanks all. I wasn't thinking of living there year round. I was just thinking it might be a good place for a beach house if the price was right. You can get a small place near the beach for much less than what you might pay in Laguna Beach or Dana Point. Sure you get what you pay for, and no doubt it doesn't compare favorably to those places. I was just wondering how bad it was.
 
<p>I suggest that you drive down and visit the beach and pier areas after dark to see what the area is like. Even on a sunny afternoon the beach and downtown is a little rough.</p>

<p>There are some serious gang areas inland off of Hiway 76. </p>

<p>Illeagal problem is also something to research. The check points are both north of Oceanside.</p>

<p>Other than that it is a fine place to LIVE< SHOP< WORK and PLAY!</p>
