Sushi in Irvine

When I see Asian girls with huge "fake" boobs, it turns me off since they look so non-natural and non-proportional. I just don't see the fascination on boobs that look like blown-up over-sized balloons. Sorry to deviate but I just had to let that off my "chest".

Back on topic - Sushi Wasabi is the best that I have tried (14460 Newport Ave, Tustin, CA)

I was introduced to this place by my Japanese friend who is very picky with sushi.

Its a hole in the wall but man is it expensive. It doesn't have the ambiance of the high end sushi places but the quality of their fish is A+ which is reflective of the price.

ts the traditional type of sushi bar where you can't order the chef picks the best catch of the day and prepares it for you.

I agree. Sushi Wasabi is much better than most the places listed here IMO.

Kitayama & Ango Tei aren't bad either. Places like Ra are good for the ambiance but not for the food.

My comments below are based on personal preference...

The chef at Sushi Wasabi tends to be more liberal with sauce, which is fine if you like the taste.

Pricing wise, they're about as expensive as Ikko for omakase. For a date, I'd lean toward Ikko for the decor.

For less expensive omakase, I'd suggest Sushi Shibucho. Lunch omakase is $24, dinner omakase at the table is $32, at the sushi bar it leans toward $50 per head. The sushi there is not heavy on the sauce and I prefer it that way. Note that the owners are on vacation atm and will return in July.

Ikko: (important: call for reservations! If no seating is avail then consider Hana no Ki down the street)

Not as good as shinsengumi, but decent and it's probably one of the last ramen places around here where you can get a bowl for $5 bucks. Bring cash.
 
^ thanks momopi ! More places to try next weekend. The wife and I pretty much tried all the good Japanese restaurants in the area. We need to check these suggestions of yours.
 
I was just at Wasa in newport off bison with a date last night, man they had some good bluefin! I'm definitely going back and ordering that by the truckload.
 
Went to Maki Maki at the Spectrum for lunch on Sat.

Had the Red Dragon roll, which is a kicked-up spicy tuna roll.

My date had the chef's special which included some deep fried rolls (tsk!...tsk!)

The food was great and I liked the atmoshpere.

We sat inside.

Initially, we were headed to Javiers but it was jam packed.

She suggested we try the sushi place (can’t remember the name of it) across from Javiers, next to Pinkberry.

Since it was close to valet parking and I like to check on my baby from time to time.

Anyway, I looked in and there wasn’t a soul in the place besides the restaurant employees not a single customer.

Which is why we ended up at Maki Maki.

The new Sushi place next to Edwards across from Javiers is Izakaya Wasa.

It was dead on Sunday too. It was about 5:00 and just totally empty.

We went over to PF Changs instead.

Hey Ten. What you driving ? You risking it with the Valet too?

I always valet mine over by the Yardhouse/Improve.

It seems to be safer as the guys will leave it in that smaller lot

that has less traffic. Much quicker to get it back as well.

We decided to try this today. It was very good and the your really can't complain about the price. The curry was awesome.

Look to the left side in the same shopping plaza and you'll find Sushi Kappo Suzumaru:

Note: The sushi chef here likes to use spicy red sauce liberally, and their sushi rice tends to be "loose". The rolls tend to taste a little sweet. Quality of sushi varies but if you ask, the chef will tell you what's fresh and good for the day.

Also, right in front of Sushi Wasabi is a Korean restaurant where you can still get lunch for $6. Their grilled meats are lacking in flavor, but the spicy soups are OK. Somewhat authentic if you like the wooden bunch and buzzing flies experience. :)

If memory serves, the Iron Monkey Roll at this place was quite tasty. Their sushi isn't the best but they have all you can eat specials on certain days, and some of the rolls are good.
 
A little OT, but if you like Japanese food and/or culture, you might be interested in visiting Zenshuji Obon carnival in LA on 7/12 and 7/13. (Yelp and / or Chowhound have a review of last year's carnival.) Free admission. It is a good time!

Try Ayame in the Orchard hills shopping center in Irvine. That is a great place for sushi among other food items. The head chef there is actually japanese, unlike the majority of "japanese" sushi bars around Orange County that are not Japanese owned or operated (mainly korean). My Japanese in-laws really liked this restaurant also.
