Apart from two hours of math, two hours of language arts, one hour of foreign language, one our of scheduled activity everyday, what are you doing this summer with your children?

We are anti-academics, and pro-A+, but I do need to fit in a foreign language study this summer. Any software suggestions that do not involve crossing the safety borders of my beloved city are most welcome. I am thinking Rosetta Stone. Any experiences with that?

We are staying home, and I could use some ideas. Going to any place that requires a passport is ruled out, we have two expired passports.. As of now, we have annual passes to Disney and Sea World- that's the only planned entertainment..

I would love to drive coast to coast, but husband isn't game. Second idea was to go North along the coast, visit every beach, bicycle/ trek wherever, and some sight seeing.

What are your plans?

Kumon kumon kumon.

Not really... but one will be in their school's summer program and the other a combination of CDC and summer camp activities.

Will probably staycation a few days with Mickey and Shamu... and drivecation another week to who knows where (the boss said Oregon/Washington but I don't know if I want to drive that far).

Looks like an identical plan except for the CDC+ Summer camp.
I am thinking, we will drive North in a rental car, and then end of the trip drop the car at Seattle, board a plane home.

My plans are just to let kids be kids. Have water gun fights. Play. I take them swimming a lot in the summer. They love that! I pack snacks and games and we stay all day. Make popsicles. Beach. I might sign them up for some short-term activities through the park & rec department, where I go with them and watch them play. What else? Movies. No studying, no academics except at their leisure. Might go to La Brea tar pits. Other than that, I just plan to spend every free moment fixing up the rest of my new house. We moved in right before school started last fall, so besides a kitchen remodel, carpet, painting, etc. (whew!) everything got put on the back burner once school began. I'll be shopping like a villain this summer!... decorating.

We like to just take it easy, no heavy commitments. Just wake up and see what we feel like doing that day!

CZ, we should take our kids to the splash pad in Tustin Ranch. It's fun.

Btw, on my last trip to Costco, I stocked up on some books and workbooks for my boys for the summer. If you guys are looking for things to keep them busy, they have a pretty good selection. Got a really thick activity book with an assortment of puzzles, strategy and math games, etc. They also had a whole bunch of books from the Diary of a Whimp Kid line. Got the ones he hasn't read yet. They also carry outdoor robes to wear pool-side. Picked up some of those.

SoCal- Yes! Lets do it this summer!
We have movies and beaches on the list, some swimming when husband is around..
Reminds me- I have some home improvement items on the list.. that will take up some time. Last year we had fun painting the bedrooms. Thankfully the carpet was being stripped. You have a lot to look forward to :-) I have changed the furniture in every room except the master bedroom now. So not much work left.. We should buy a home in Lambert ranch may be ;-) Bigger canvas to work on.

IHS- beach or city? :-) Both sound good!

Done! Never get bored or something like that- right?
Books- I push them to read even during school year, so nothing special for summer.

Not much of a beach but close enough to the water. The loft is near the Highline by the Meatpacking District very close to the High Line. All Holidays and Summers we lived a city life and for the rest of the year sleepy suburbia without a soul by 9pm. Coney Island is not much of a beach and near the ghetto side of Brooklyn.

Costco also has an activity kit to make animals out of pipe cleaner. Comes with googly eyes, instructions and everything. I Heart Costco. They are so excited about this. Excited about the books, too. I've been gifted with a kid who loves to read. He can't wait to get into the books. I'm trying to keep everything in the bag until school is out for the summer but it hasn't been easy!

They also carry two different books on Tustin's history. Each one has lots of pictures. Very interesting. Old news articles, scandal, historical buildings - beautiful, gorgeous buildings. I don't buy books often for myself but I bought them both.

I love those history books! I haven't bought any yet, but I do browse through..
Haven't seen the kit- is it at Technology? I heart Costco too!! Most of the things in my house came from Costco..

That's the best of both worlds :-)

The craft kit is mixed right in with the books. Not sure why. They also have another craft kit that is more geared towards girls.

Yep, Costco and Target = Disneyland for me. Heck. They even sell churros. It IS Disneyland! Could spend hours wandering the aisles.

we have no kids. we will be going back to europe - germany, netherlands and maybe ireland.

Sounds like an interesting plan! Did you plan it on your own, or is it a package tour?

we plan it on our own. we dont like to use tours so it gives us more flexibility to extend/decrease stays in locations (both sites and cities) depending on how we like them.

More late late summer, but a family cruise out of Boston and then onto Halifax and some other full port calls along the New England coast.  First vacation with our daughter also second vacation with my in-laws.  Nervous and excited at the same time.

Plan to starve the week before and binge eat on the ship, should be fun.

Nice seeing you at lunch today!

I love how we always get stares from neighboring tables when we get worked up in passionate conversation.

Maybe Costco will be a safer place to talk next time.  :)

Kid is in HS but we have been able to schedule around the school to enjoy our place in the city. Most of the time we leave our kid in the suburb. We don't believe in making sacrifices for the younger generation just to deprive ourselves from enjoying life. Moving to a sardine can so the kid could attend a high API school may be ok for many families but not for us.
