Solid v. Lattice Coverage

I have young kids so am looking to add a patio cover to my backyard to get some shade.  I am struggling with whether to go with solid or lattice coverage. Of course, solid would give more shade, but I'm concerned that it could darken the inside of the home and limit the views (even if it's just of sky and trees). It seems like the modern trend with the California room is a solid roof, whereas the 2000s' homes had traditional lattice style patio covers.

I'm in the midst of this and chose lattice for the light factor.  I think if you do a full blown CA room that might be a better way to go but it'll probably cost you $30k to do it right with electrical, matching stucco, roofing, etc.

My contractor is also going to put recessed lights in the rafter beams of my lattice cover (low voltage) which swayed me more to lattice as I didn't realize this was possible.

When I purchase my new home, builder offers optional CA room for merely $5000 but declined it also due to light issue and the CA room will make the already small yard even smaller.

Now I'm kind of regretting it.  Sure, the CA room will darken the interior a little but the privacy it provide and cooling the interior during hot summer month will be worth it.

I would recommend CA room with full roof over lattice coverage if the budget allows.

We have young kids too and did a trellis type structure and then put retractable sail shades underneath.  Provides full shade coverage during the summer and can be retracted during the winter to provide more light.  We've been very happy with them so far.

Not to mention that for the 7 days a year we get rain, you have a drier outdoor area.
And those days that it rains, you could sit out back, bbq, and kind of relax to some rain while you stay dry.  A CA room is one of the things I look forward to when I finally buy my new house.  That said, it might turn into one of those things that I go, oh, thats it, oh well. But I think in this era of great rooms, etc, having that covered outdoor room is a nice option to kind of expand your overall house.  Key being you have to have somewhat of a yard.

Joe -- Would you be able to point us to the product you used -- and post some pics if possible -- we are also in the same situation -- Trellis + Kids :-)

Also how much did it cost to do that?

Thanks

The trellis structure was already there when we bought the house, so we just paid to put the sail shades in.  We had 4 panels about 4 to 5 feet wide and 20 or so feet long.  We used a sunbrella fabric.  The fabric cost $4/SF and the installation cost another $4/SF.  So all in cost was about $2400.  It is hung from a wire system that they strung from the trellis.

I don't have a picture of ours with me, but I tried to attach a picture of something that looks just like it.  Hope it works.

This is a cool idea.  Joe do you remember who installed this?

We had a general contractor who was doing a larger backyard project for us.  I think he brought in a sub-contractor to install the sail shades and i don't know how the sub was.
