Solar Panel - Which company to go with?

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
I'm interested in getting solar panels for my house in Portola Springs. We just got an estimate from Solar City but was curious to know what other companies people have gone with. Thanks.

We have Sunpower purchased through the builder.  So far so good.
My friend used ABC Solar and she's happy with the result.

I had around 5 companies come out to do estimates about a month or so ago. Was kind of disappointed. A couple companies, SunPower and another wouldn't even do it, just don't have the roof space and I guess facing the wrong direction. SolarCity sounded the most promising, 20 year lease, but would only cover about half my electric use. I'd still be in Tier 4 most months. May end up doing SolarCity, saves around $70 per month net. Waiting for Elon Musk's Tesla home battery announcement on the 30th. That would allow the panels to store energy and also use grid energy at night when it's cheaper than the day.

Like I previously said in the other thread, the battery storage is key.

It's like this, would you lease a computer for 20 years? You would probably say no. The other issue is if you sell your house, transferring the lease. Therefore you might have to reduce your selling price, because the buyer might not want the old solar technology panels on their roof.

If I sold the house it wouldn't be for another 5 to 10 years minimum. At that point I would just buy out the rest of the lease. I could just prepay the lease at $10k up front but I'd rather just invest it in stocks.

What's your monthly electric bill?

My Edison bill is only $1 a month. Had to go with SunPower also, since it was through the builder.

Pre-solar monthly electric bill

Have had solar panels at my current residence ever since I moved in. At my previous residence, which was smaller in square footage, my bill varied from $150-$550.

I assume you got a great deal, since you bought it through the builder.

If you have that amount of usage solar is a good match

Did you get any year-end adjustments from Edison? How long have you been in your house?

Can you disclose the approx square footage?

I've lived in homes that have varied from 1800-3600sft in Irvine and I have never seen an electric bill over $150.

Damn, I'm jealous. Lowest bill I've had since moving into this 1974 sqft Jasmine house last year is $163, that's in the winter with 0 AC use. Expecting $300+ in the summer with AC. Lived in a two bedroom Los Olivos apt before and bill was never under $100. Have fans in every room too. Probably will need a second fridge for the garage soon too.

Anxiously awaiting Tesla's home battery announcement tomorrow for some kind of relief.

Hmmm.

We have a second fridge, multiple TVs and computers.

So either you are also running a bones Tiger Mom server farm or your home is wired wrong ala ZeroLot.

Have you used the Edison online usage utility to see when you are drawing so much juice?

Mmnn.  Aren't the new builds supposed to be more energy efficient?  I am smelling price gouging conspiracy here.

Do you work at home? Does a family member stay home during the day? What type of electronic devices do you have running?

I work at home sometimes. AC is usually set at 77 or 78. 79 when gone. Have a PC with dual monitors, iMac with dual monitors, couple laptops others use, 85" 4k TV, 60" TV, receiver, subwoofer, 11 speakers, Xbox One, Wii U, PS4, AppleTV, Roku, DirecTV, Chromecast, phones and tablets always being charged.

Maybe that's it, I only turn on the AC when we are home and if it's too unbearable.

It's usually cool still in the afternoon and only gets hotter at night.

But AC only gets used during summer so not sure why your bill runs so high during the winter/cold days.
