Small backyard landscaping ideas

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
I have just purchased a house at Colibri in Portola Springs. My backyard is pretty small but long (width of the house wise). From the back of the house to the wall is only 9ft long. I was wondering if anyone had pictures of their backyards with the landscaping completed. I am just looking for some ideas on the best possible way to utilize all the space for the backyard. Thanks.

I would suggest going vertical with trellis.  Vine plants like grape, passion fruit, cucumber, etc.  They can be easily trimmed flat.  Cucumber and peas will need to be replanted annually.

For maintenance is easy, just roll your trashcan along with a pair of cutters.  snip snip and into trashcan.  Build the trellis to height of wall and have 3-5 wires (or netting for cucumber)

How often you have to trim will depend on how much water you feed the plants.  I just helped my friend in Mission Viejo plant grape vines, not difficult at all.  Just need some coffee grounds.

Visiting different model homes is another way to get ideas and inspiration for your back yard.  Fortunately for Irvine, we have numerous model homes and many with small back yard for ideas.

Most of these model home come with small back yard and a very simple design.  Basically paved the entire yard with some type of pavers (concrete, natural stone, or bricks) than surround by dense plants along the wall.  You may add some water future and planters to makes the design a little more interesting.

Here's some example from Mulberry, Mendocino and Laurel
