Not long ago, accountant John Rubi would join his work buddies for lunch at a Chili's Grill & Bar in Foothill Ranch on Monday and move on to a nearby Daphne's Greek Cafe the next day. They wouldn't give a second thought about checking out an Asian eatery later in the week. After work, the Aliso Viejo resident would take his girlfriend to dinner at Mama D's Italian in Manhattan Beach and spend $70 to $100, depending on the wine.

No more. Rubi lost his job in the auto-lending division of an Orange County financial institution last year and now works for a different firm in a lower-paid accounting position.

"I eat at home more. I pack my lunch. I cut out Starbucks, and when I do go to a Burger King or McDonald's I get the 99-cent burger," Rubi said.

The reference in the article about LA Live is accurate.

The high-end places that opened there and are already hurting.

My friends and I had dinner at the new Flemings, which just opened across from Staples before the Cav?s game last month.

It was half-empty, tons of staff standing around with no one to wait on.

On the other hand, the ESPN Zone was full and seemed to be doing good business both before and after the game.

I think the fact that LA Times has more ads on the page than most spam sites are indicative of the trying times. Or maybe it's just LA Times that's trying....

I wasn't quite sure what thread to put this in, but here is a sign of the times as it relates to Orange County...

Yesterday I received two urgent notices from my son's elementary school. <a href="http://www.families-forward.org/index.htm">"Families Forward"</a>, which is a non-profit group that assists needy families in Orange County, is asking for immediate help with food donations. I looked into this organization to find out more about why the need may be so urgent. Their site says, "Many of the families come to us after losing their homes or having been evicted from their apartments." Apparently they must be experiencing some overwhelming demand right now. Just some "food" for thought.

One of our best friends is a couselor/social worker with Families Foward, and I can confirm through discussions with her that their needs are critical right now. Some of the stories of things going on out there are heartbreaking.

I was watching real orange yesterday and they where estimating the homeless population has mushroomed to over 40 thousand here in Orange County and that there are 16 thousand children going to school that have no permanent address. This may give some insight of why it is so bad.

What's up with the Irvine crime reports, didn't it just used to be like realtor signs were missing type stuff just a few months ago?
