Seriously WTF is wrong with the OC Register?

This photo is my favorite part:

Then again the comparison shot to the shroud of Turin is nice too:

This warrants 8 pictures apparently... This one is a keeper too:

I know its wrong to make fun of the mentally ill. I'm sorry.

I Want to Believe!

Try as I might, I could not see Jesus in the chair. Can anyone else?

I can't see Jesus, either.

The OC Register is just opening up these poor ladies to mockery. I wonder if they are sniggering over there right now.

The online comments are brutal but that is par for the course on the Register site.

If they didn't creep me out I'd feel sorrier for them.

I respect that they aren't putting the chair up for sale on Ebay for thousands of dollars as some have done with other various things containing holy images.

All I see are 2 coconuts that have been swaying from the palm for far too long, and are now starting to rot from the top down.

Having spoken to some OC Register reporters, I will tell you that they are frustrated too. They write a great investigative piece and get 500 hits, while someone writes some crap about Octamom and gets 50,000 hits. The news consumer seems to demand an unending stream of useless soft news garbage, so that is what they produce.

Yes, it's quite sad. I went to The Women's Conference last year and when Maria Shriver spoke to the audience, she described her return (or almost return; I cannot remember) to broadcast journalism and how she ultimately opted against the return because the field had changed so much. Now, where's that naked wizard video.

That's interesting. I wonder why this effect is so much more noticeable in a paper like the OC Register vs. a Washington Post or even LA Times. Did it just have less far to fall? Was the Register ever a "real" paper? It reminds me of a high school paper - only it comes out more often.

The OC Register has also been posting salary databases for individual O.C. Firefighters, Sheriff Deputies and other state employees. Granted, they are public servants, but I view this as an invasion of privacy. While some of the information is eye-opening (who would have known that fire-fighters work so much overtime?), I don't know how it benefits the public to know how much an entry-level administrative clerk at UCI makes. I think it is fine to post salary ranges by job, but to include the person's name along with their salary is not acceptable.

I like these articles as they are about as hard-hitting as the Register gets. But I agree the employee's names are not necessary except maybe the top brass in appointed positions.

heh, I enjoy reading about what the dishwasher at the hospital cafeteria makes...

but agree, they should restrict it to say, the top 10% or people who make a lot more than everyone else in their job class.

The Irvine World News has an inane feature where they ask a dumb question (i.e. "What are you doing on Mother's Day") and show pictures of 3 people who all give the same brilliant answer (i.e. "Going to a restaurant.") My high school paper had the exact same feature...they called it "Roving Lens," which is a better title than the Register uses. My high school paper asked better questions though.

I cannot stand when I log into the OCR website and see a picture of the "OC After Dark" crap or whatever it is called. I don't go to the OCR to get my national or international news, but, I do like to read about what's going on locally. I don't want to see bar/club photos of unknown people. I go to Perez and TMZ for that crap.

Hahahaha. Exactly! What is that crap? It's like they are scouting out future "actors" for shows like the Real Housewives or the Hills.

I didn't mind the chair piece. What I minded though was - what was up with the photographer? Multiple pictures and no close up photo of the spot? That photographer was more interested in artistic shots than the "story".

The photography is usually on par with the quality of the writing I find. My favorite photo expose from a few months ago was about what really goes on in the woods of Coto. It turns out - wait for it - kids hang out there and drink water, soda and EVEN beer in them there woods. They had about 20 pictures of evidence of this wrong doing in a small area of Coto. Not even worthy of a high school paper.

Lame article du jour -

Woman carrying noodles hospitalized after being hit by car

The noodles are really important apparently. My favorite reader comment: "Maybe the plate was piled so high with noodles that it blocked her vision and therefore she, not the driver, is at fault?"

^ LOL! I had to click to see if you were kidding. That's a good one. Did you see this user comment on one of the photos? Funny...

"mmasterson wrote:

The listing of noodles in the story implies that the person hit was probably Asian. OCR is limited on how they can describe people, so they are probably using code words. If the person hit was carrying an In-N-Out double double animal style hamburger, that would imply tha they were a white male in their 20's."

Looks like we have a "guest" writer in the OC Register this week.

He is filling in while a reporter is on Vacation.

Hopefully Irvine Renter is getting more than a free subscription for his time and effort.

I sure enjoy reading Larry over Jon Lansner anyday.
