Senior Apt or Housing in Irvine (or surrounding area)

Irvinerenter and other bloggers,

I'm looking for senior apartment or housing for my parents. It's too expensive to buy (or even rent) a big house with 4 or 5 bedrooms for us to live together so I was wondering if any of you can give me info or tips to find "affordable" Irvine housing for seniors. I heard the waiting list for senior apt could be anywhere from 2 to 5 years. I also heard that Irvine apt are obligated to carry a few units available for low income family or couple, but not sure where to start. If my parents could move within 6 months, it would be great and less pressure on me financially. Thank you for your comments in advance.
 
Would Laguna Woods be out of the question? The places are really in need of some love, but they're cheap and they're just down the 5. When the prices soften in Irvine, you could just bounce mom and dad back up to where you buy. Are they just like old or do they have elder needs as well?

They are old but no need for any assistance. I just want somewhere close to where I live (in Irvine) so if anything happens I can be in reach. Thanks for your comment, though. We'll keep searching for it.
 
I seem to remember a senior living complex on Harvard right before it hits Culver (close to UCI and the Albertsons plaza). Have you tried that community?
 
You can contact the Lakeview Senior Center at 949-724-6926 (their resource center) for a list of senior housing. It is true that if they need low income it will be nearly impossible. It is unfortunate, but true. Get them on the lists that are still open and they may call when you least expect it!
 
Be warned that the HOA fees at Laguna Woods can range from $500/month to $1600 + $500 for second resident (spouse) at the towers. Those tower apartments are cheap to buy for a reason.

I think Leisure World in Seal Beach has average monthly HOA fee of $300'ish, it's a bit of a drive from Irvine but accessible via 405 FWY. I'm not an expert in this field, so you might want to check with a few agents who specialize in retirement property.
 
We found out that to get in the center on Harvard near Mason park costs $25,000 up front and over $5000 a month. And they were recently cited for a rodent infestation.
 
Have them rent a property in Laguna Woods. LW is not for people who need assitance. Well I guess they have both. I think LW is a great deal for active seniors. I work in the area and I swear its better then a retirement home. They have 200 clubs, golf, swimming, bus system etc.. Rent is cheaper then Irvine and they can only be board if they choose too. I think a two bedroom is about $1500 which that includes the HOA if you rent.
