Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to give a heads up to anyone here who may currently be renting from Wimbledon Glen in Costa Mesa or any Arnel owned property that we were robbed last week while we lived at Wimbledon Glen and the owner, Arnel, isn't alerting their residents. Our place was broken into while we were at work last Thursday, in broad daylight. We had an exterier location on the property and maintenance staff, who usually drives by every 15 minutes, claims they didn't see anything suspicious. All our tv's, computer, jewelry and other expensive items were stolen. Our entire place was ransacked and they even used our luggage to haul the things out in. When we got home, everything was on the floor. We were left with almost nothing.

Arnel Properties is not informing their residents of what occurred and we feel that it is important to know those things as it can obviously happen to anyone. So please be careful and talk with your neighbors if they see anything suspicious. We moved out the same weekend and now reside in a gated community with a guard and now have an alarm system. You can never be too careful.

CalGal:

We had two-story town home there and from the front of the first level, there is a small window to a powder room and a large glass window next to the front door. They tried to break the large glass window by the door first, but must have had trouble because we had contact paper covering the inside specifically for privacy. Instead, they broke in by breaking the bathroom window and climbing through.

It is a relatively safe neighborhood and does have a gate. After everything, the police officers say someone must have been watching our place and knew what we had and when we'd be gone. We had to sleep there for two more nights after it happened and it is one of the worst feelings in the world to have to sleep someplace where you know someone has violated your privacy. I know we won't see our stuff again, but I hope that by warning people about it that theives like this will think twice.

KD_B,

I am really sorry for what happen to you, and I would never wish it to my worst enemy, because the feeling is eirie. BUT do you honestly think a theft like that would read this forum?

I am suprise Arnel did not sent out flyer to warm other tenants, but then it is Arnel....did Arnel refund your security deposit in full? If they did, count your blessing.

Not surprised at the lack of notice. A friend of mine lives in a complex in Riverside that's been hit by an auto crime ring - multiple car thefts and probably dozens of car break-ins. My friend has had her car hit TWICE - a break-in to try to steal it (unsuccessful, but major damage from lockpicking and hotwiring attempts) and having her catalytic converter sawn off. Nada from the management. They even told her they were concerned they would lose tenants if this became public knowledge!

KD_B,

I am so sorry this happened to you. We had our house broken into when we lived in Texas and they stole all my jewelry, including family heirlooms,so I know what you mean about someone violating your privacy.

We live in an IAC complex and had some bad vandalism and theft happen a couple of years ago to about 10 cars in the parking lot. No notice of it from management either. We only knew because it happened to our neighbors.

If possible, don't leave stuff that you can't afford to be stolen in the house. If it's small enough, rent a bank safety deposit box.

I made the mistake of installing an alarm many years ago, and the alarm monitoring company was more shandy than the burglars. The sales guy forged a random signature on an extended contract and they tried to get me to pay thousands of dollars for early termination.

I don't think that a theif would read this forum, but rather people who are renting will be extra cautious as it can happen anytime, even if you think you live in a safe neighborhood. If people raised their awareness to these things and also coordinated with their neighbors to keep an eye out for anything suspicious, it will keep the neighborhood safer.

Arnel didn't do a thing, including giving us a refund. We actually just paid rent for the month, too. We found out from one of the employees that Arnel isn't doing so well. About half the units at Wimbledon Glen are empty and they are having a hard time filling all their properties.

Momopi:

That's horrible!! I can't believe an alarm company would try to do that.

I recently installed those window alarms on a Soul Sister's windows in LA. Most annoying alarm sounds ever! For 10 bucks and the effort, not a bad effort to payoff ratio.

I lived in a condo in Westminster. The burglar even shit in my toilet before he left. He did not even have the courtesy to flush it. I have been burglarized 5 times and each time I learned about my environment. You can not avoid it but certainly can minimize it by selecting a home at a good defesible location.

Read sometime ago tips from an ex-thief. Best he said would be a monitored alarm - and if you can't afford that - a large dog is almost as good...

BK- you been robbed 5 times? damn.... you need new friends. most of the time when you get rob it is usually somebody you know.

best anti-thief advice..... don't buy anything that is worth anything for other to steal.

The first 3 times were during my childhood in Highland Park and Echo Park. The thieves used my pillow cases as bags for small valubles. I was poor and there were not much worth stealing. I lived in the ghettos even a toaster had some value.

bk- i hear ya. i grew up in the ghetto too, and my family was robbed once. Errie feeling......... but the sad part was that the thief only stole my stuff. All my comic book collection and baseball card collection, my clothes, and everything i had. They didn't take the money or jewelry in my parents room. bunch of idiots. oh well.....

KB,

Did you get your security back? You know you are entitled the full refund right? Let me know if you need help. I know how Arnell worked.

Tulip:

I didn't know we were supposed to get our security deposit back. Do they still give it to you even if they have to clean and replace things before they can rent it back out? If you can give me more information, that would be awesome! As I mentioned earlier, it really sucked cause we had just paid rent the week before we got robbed and we weren't even there for half the month. So far, we haven't heard anything from Wimbledon Glen or Arnel.
