Recommendations for Antivirus software for PC?

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
I use the free ones, Microsoft's Security Center and AVG, but I'm very vigilant with the web and email.

There is another free one called Panda... no relation to Johns Creek.  :D

AVG, Avast and Microsoft Essential are all pretty good.  You should also add spyware and firewall software, both of which you can get for free at download.com (it's a safe site...run by CNET).

If you want to have full versions, look for Fry's ads.  They often run specials on security software for $20 or less.  Just punch in the name of the company into google for ratings.

Finally, security software is absolutely no defense for stupidity/naivety.  Don't open any e-mails/attachment from people you don't know.  Heck, don't open attachment from people you know unless you know exactly what it is.  Don't go to site you're not sure about or click on deals/links that seem too good to be true.

I currently use Microsoft Essentials, but I'm just nervous that it isn't enough.

I'm fine with paying for good software, but worried about how it would work with my computer.  I recall having McAfee a couple of years ago, and it felt like it really slowed down my system.

Irvinecommuter, what do you use?

I use AVG and built in firewall.  AVG also removes adware.  My router also has a built in firewall.

I'm also pretty diligent about not opening emails from problem sources and about not downloading free programs.

If the anti-virus program is saving you regularly, the problem exist between the keyboard and the chair.
