Recess Lighting for dark homes

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
i just had a quick questing regarding recess lighting. My great room is constantly dark as I am surrounded by homes in all directions, so I rarely get natural light into my house. Therefore our lights are always on in the great room. I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for recess lights that would it make it more like natural daylight inside the house, instead of the fluorescent lighting that comes with the new homes.

Also, if I was to change my lights, can I just change the bulbs or would I have to change the fitting?

I believe you can get LED lights that have a warmer glow rather than the bright white.

I know they have fluorescent lights in "daylight" versions.

You just need to change the bulbs.

In addition to color (~5000K), look at intensity, angle and style.  I've found the retrofit bulbs at Costco to be excellent and they won't break the bank.  Single body with a flush mount flange, wide (>130 degree) angle and bright (1300 lumens).  Even within Costco there are different retrofit models, so make sure to look at the specs.

5000K may be most like "daylight" but it feels very harsh. I favor the warmer glow of 2700K on a bright bulb (>1000 lumens). Also, it seems that at night you do not want such as a high color temperature as it interferes with melatonin levels (impacts your sleep cycle).

One way to take care of that is put the lights on the dimmer.
