Quiznos In Quail Hill - Will not honor the free corporate coupon

We saw a couple being hassled by the managers/owners of the Quail Hill Quiznos. Apparently the corporate coupon for a free sub (million sub give away) was not being accepted there. The two managers were quite rude to these customers and we just left after witnessing their dressing down the customers who were supposed to know that the corporate promotion was hurting this particular location. How is this a good promotion if you risk pissing off a million customers who cannot redeem the freebie? We will never go back there. They don't deserve the patronage.

I like subway much better anyways.
 
We decided to complain directly to corporate. The girl said she was writing up complaints on the locations. She also said to hold onto the coupons and that she'd get back to us - my argument was, if you have a coupon but can't use it, should it just be thrown away?

I suggest than anyone who has a coupon call and lodge a complaint and maybe at SOME point, you might be able to redeem for a freebie. That is one poorly run company, it would seem

As a former franchise owner (not in the food industry) you can only tolerate so much of this stuffed down your throat from corporate before you have to make a decision to either close your doors or stop accepting the coupons.

The effect on your day to day cash flow from a program like this is crushing. You can't redeem those coupons to your landlord to pay the rent.

Won't corporate provide them the revenue that they would have otherwise made when accepting the coupons? I mean, the franchisees do pay an annual royalty and part of their monthly revenues to corporate so why wouldn't corporate help them out? The goal of these coupons is to get people in the door to try a free subway and get them hooked.

The best franchise store to have is a McDonalds.

I use to go to Quiznos all the time, but always thought they are too expensive. I went to the one on Irvine Center Blvd couple times during the past two months. It seems that the owner was never happy when I just order two $2 pitas without drink. I stop going there.
 
I looked up the reviews for Quiznos and they aren't good. From issues about filth, soaking meat in water to make it heavier per portion, skimping on ingredients, tampering with the weighing mechanism, franchises under incredible corporate pressure.... the list is pretty awful.

In particular, since the Subway Sandwich franchises now will bake whatever sandwich you want, the Quiznos appeal is down drastically because of cost and quality/freshness. Many have closed their doors. The snark and defensiveness that I saw today was troubling, but under further review, there seems to be a whole bunch of problems that would compromise the owners' business tactics. I think I'm done with Quiznos. I will follow up with corporate, however, out of curiosity. It seems like their business model is quite toxic in a number of ways. I can't see this company surviving if it keeps operating like this. A million pissed off customers who cannot find a "participating" location, is never a good business move.

If you are a distressed franchise, and Corporate is going to give you a credit back against the fees you are supposed to pay them in the first place but haven't because your top line collapsed by 25%, what's the point? I’m not saying it is, but I have no idea what the reimbursement deal is. By the response from the franchisees, I assume corporate is only reimbursing for the cost of food and paper, leaving the individual franchisee to eat the labor and the rest of the costs.

A big complaint among franchisees has been food costs. Food and paper costs should be less than 30 percent of revenues for a franchise to be profitable, yet many store owners said their costs ran well into the mid to high 30s. Some sandwiches were even worse -- food and paper for the Prime Rib sandwich, with 5 ounces of meat, was $4.50. The suggested price for the sub was $10. Because of the cost, many storeowners boosted the sandwich's price to $12 or $13, which hurt sales.

Franchisees say that the company had a big incentive to force higher food costs on them because much of the chain's revenue comes from American Food Distributors, the Quiznos subsidiary that buys food from vendors and distributes it to franchisees. AFD took in nearly $500 million in revenue in 2006, according to Quiznos' uniform franchise offering circular, and took in $26.6 million in rebates from vendors.

My brother picked up a Harvard Business Review while laid over in Phoenix a couple of months ago that documented what a horrible roll out Quiznos did on their competition product to the Subway $5 Footlong. I can't find the cite, but it was rather damning.

Corporate is in it for Corporate. Always. If it works for the franchisee, it's a mistake. The Franchise Agreement was designed to protect the Franchisee from the big bad company. These days, the company has developed the Franchise Agreement as an indeminity document that is (in most cases) 3 or 4 inches thick to be used as a weapon against the franchisee.

A buddy of mine has four or five in the midwest. They jam stuff down your throat too, like pizza (remember that?) and coffee (the remodel for the coffee bar addition to a McDonalds is $300K that the franchisee has to eat – or else).

I've not eaten at a Quiznos in ten years (I try to avoid all chains when I can), but I have a lot of empathy if the stories I read are correct. I made money every year I owned my franchise, but in retrospect, they were all miserable.

My comment was based upon reading some business week article about what the top 10 franchises in terms of earnings per store were and McDonalds was at the top of the list. Just like WalMart pushes their suppliers around, McDonalds has the same push on their franchisees. I do remember that horrible pizza they had bad in the day. Now if they would only bring back those non-white chicken mcnuggets and deep fried apple and cherry pies I'd be a happy camper. haha

My comment was based upon reading some business week article about what the top 10 franchises in terms of earnings per store were and McDonalds was at the top of the list. Just like WalMart pushes their suppliers around, McDonalds has the same push on their franchisees. I do remember that horrible pizza they had bad in the day. In addition to the dark McNuggets and fried apple pies, my favorite item at McD was their old style Filet-O-Fish with the proper STEAMED bun. Unfortunately, the only place I have found it in recent years is at McDonalds in Europe. I feel sorry for the youngsters who have only ever know the hard, dry, Filet-O-Fish now served. I will drive up to 100 miles for a McDonalds serving McRib.

Gotta go to Wendy's these days to find the non-white chicken nuggets. They have some good $1 value options that are competative with McDonalds. Wendy's value meal options. Sometimes when I am at the Technology Dr. Costco, we go to the Wendy's in the parking lot next door as the kids really like the chicken nuggets there (5 nuggets for $1). Staff seems friendly and helpful as well.
