I think the point is that the LL can make things more painful for the OP than it has to be. Based on this thread, it looks like the facts are in the OP's side, but you never know how this could end up if the eviction proceedings go through. Better to avoid this altogether.

To avoid such a situation, I agreed to resign at a rate inbetween the two rent points. I do not consider myself totally fine until I receive a copy of the signed lease back (lest I remind everyone he did promise this once before).

I still think the LL's only saving grace is that he did not send a signed lease copy back to me. I signed the new lease to avoid hassle but still believe that I was in the right, as it seems like to me that its the LL saying "Make good on my mistakes, or I'll evict you."
