It was obvious to most Capitol Hill insiders why President Obama wanted Republican Judd Gregg as a member of his cabinet: He's one of the sharpest money-minds in Congress.

But instead of getting Gregg's counsel within the administration, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner found himself today of the receiving end of Gregg's fiscal conservative wrath.

In a hearing before the Senate Budget Committee Gregg dressed down Geithner with facts, figures, and charts. While always keeping his cool, the exchange was somewhere between a mother's scolding, a drill sergeant's questioning and an attorney's cross examination.

In his opening statement, Gregg politely called the administration's budget forecast a lie.

"The argument that it cuts the debt in half in four years is, ahh, is truly spurious," he told Geithner.

President Obama himself gives Gregg's comments a sense of stinging credibility. When the president introduced Gregg as his nominee for Commerce Secretary last month, he said Gregg is known for is fiscal discipline.

"He shares my deep-seated commitment to guaranteeing that our children inherit a future they can afford," Obama said.

Today, the president's compliment of Gregg turned into an attack on Geithner. Gregg said the budget is essentially "putting on our children's backs a debt they can never get out from underneath."

He added pointedly, "I think we're putting at risk not only our children's future, we're clearly putting at risk the value of a dollar and our ability to sell debt."

When Gregg withdrew his nomination, he said he and the administration were "functioning from a different set of views on many critical items of policy."

Gregg's opening monologue today would indicate that was a gross understatement.

"The argument that this budget doesn't have tax increases [on everyone] is, I think, an 'Alice in Wonderland' view of the budget," he said.

<strong><u>He challenged the budget's math on cutting the debt: "When you take the deficit and quadruple it and then you cut it and half, that's like taking four steps back and two steps forward. That's not making any progress; you're still going backwards."</u></strong>

Gregg questioned why any foreign country would continue to buy up U.S. debt: "Because if I'm in the international marketplace, and I'm looking at this budget, I'm saying to myself, ?Where's the discipline? Where's the containment?' There isn't any."

In his withdrawal statement last month, Gregg said, "I expect there will be many issues and initiatives where I can and will work to assure the success of the president's proposals."

The budget doesn't appear to be one of them.

On the brighter side for the younger generation - at least the credit crisis has evened out things some (ex. baby boomer sees value of portfolio and house fall - therefore has to work longer and continue to contribute economically instead of flipping those for a big profit to the younger generation and retiring). The financial burden/need to work is more evened out between the generations now.

Yeah - old people can't retire, keeping closed spots for younger gen Y workers, and sticking up the works for the Gen Xers.

Thanks for the nice Mark Steyn article.

For those who may not be aware of the author.

Mr. Steyn is a regular backup for Rush Limbaugh on his radio show as host when Rush is out of town or on vacation.

"He is the most toxic right-wing pundit you?ve never heard of. ... Right-wing carny barkers such as Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, and Sean Hannity,"

This guy wants to have another crusade against Islam. Can you say Xenophobia ?

He is just a breath away from being as radical as the Dutchman Geert Wilders

when it comes to his hatred of anything Muslim.

Can you refute any of his points or is it just that you discredit everything he says because he is a Rush wannabe?

Looking at the article it seems pretty spot on with what we are doing. The hopey changey was kinda funny and I don't blame this whole mess on Obama but we are taxing our kids for our mistakes.

There is no doubt about that.

do you have a better solution? we are not spending money just for the heck of it. We are investing in our future through these stimulus programs. Whether or not it'll be successful only time will tell. I am really annoyed by these tax crying babies. When you drive on the roads or freeways who do you think built that? or the free education you got as a kid who paid for that? Whatever happened to "There no such thing as a free lunch"

Just tired of the "Obama will Fail" mantra. Kind of like calling "Bush the Devil".

As far as the GM example with healthcare.

Guess who pays for all that Japanese and European Healthcare ? It aint Toyota or Volvo.

Its hard to be competitive when you compare companies that have no healthcare obligations.

America must bite the bullet. Just think when all the "Defined Benefit" employees are converted to "Defined Contribution". And thats going to happen to GM. Either via BK or

as a ward of the government.

But beware. First its GM employees. Then its the Teachers, Fire and Police. And god forbid

those $ 100K a year Prison Guard Union Workers. The unions will all be busted in time.

Those long term pensions will ALL be a thing of the past. Becareful you may get what you wished for.

I have a son. And he is aware of whats happening. He is not happy but aware.

He has even resigned himself that he wont ever see his Social Security.

So he is busting his butt and saving his money.

The Mark Steyn guy goes so far as to warn the English and the Europeans that the

Muslim Children will grow up and take over Europe. They have a high birth rate !?!

That guy is really "fringe" if you listen to some of his vile.

Next step is to "Clean Up" Europe from "Dangerous" immigrants.

Some guy in Europe tried this back in the 30`s. It didnt work out well for him

in the end as I recall.
