Is it just me or are the opening ceremonies a bit boring?

Maybe Beijing raised the bar too high.

+1

I fast forwarded through most of it. Opening ceremonies: Beijing > London.

You play volleyball too? I assume you have a degree in astrophysics also?

Men's team volleyball looks dominant... beach volleyball not so much. US woman's vball looks good on both court types.

The internet and sports radio is spoiling the Olympics for me... now I just watch the NBC night show as like a replay of what happened.

Am I the only one who thinks that the other countries gave the US women their gymnastics gold? I mean, the Fab Five were good... but Russia, Romania and China were uncharacteristically bad.

Watching the USA basketball games is like watching the All-Star game... you're not really looking at the score... just trying to catch the awesome alley oops and dunks.

When did the Chinese become such good swimmers? Must be all those Waterworks classes in Irvine.

wired ran a great story on the olympics and how much science and technology are playing a role.  of the big medal winning countries, USA is the only one that doesnt have a govt sponsored program or funding for athletes.  other countries have serious training camps and selection processes.

Hey... don't give our government any ideas... I don't want to see a 2014 Winter Olympics tax.

IMHO, all the pro-athlete can go home.  The volleyball players, basketball players, send them all home. I don't care if we don't win more medals.  The games are wrecked by the professional programs.

Or we can be like China.  Getting our team disqualified by throwing a match so our teams don't meet up against each other before the final.  Or hide a grand-parent's death from a diver for a year...

That is interesting.  In my days (olden days), we used to complain why we didn't have our professionals go to the Olympics because for a lot of other countries, those "amateurs" are really professionals, fully paid and supported by their countries.

I do understand your point that a lot of these U.S. pros don't have the Olympic spirit.  They expect first class accommodations, etc.

Those badminton match throwings were inexcusable.  They did the right thing to toss out those players, although some of the players were victims too because they were probably forced by their coaches to throw the match.

I'm glad those Dream Team II(?) were shown that they aren't invincible and better than Dream Team I.  Hopefully, that'll make them work harder.  I still want them to win.

Why do swimmers drink the pool water before they swim? I don't see the track people tasting the dirt before they run.

I've come to the conclusion that I prefer watching track to swimming... the athleticism is easier to see... just wish they would do that moving World Record timeline like they do in swimming.
