Need help proving noise

You guys are the BEST for all things Irvine and I'm hoping you can help me out yet again.

My downstair neighbor in my IAC apartment is very loud. He has surround sound and it's surrounding me!!

The management called him, but he basically denied the problem. What's the best way to record the noise? How do I prove my case?

I've never had a problem with a neighbor before and feel bad complaining. But I think I have a right to reasonable quiet in my home most days.

Sounds like the subwoofer is against the supporting wall. Odds are he has a pattern. Pay attention and document when the noise occurs. It's odd for the noise to travel up, usual side and below are primarily exposed. Figure out when it occurs and invite IAC management over at targeted times. Are you really sure it was downstairs and not a different neighbor?

You won't likely be able to pick up with any recording, the sound level is probably too low, about the level of a computer fan, but it's eminating from the entire wall. I had a similar problem with a neighbor, his subwoofer rattled through the common wall. Loud enough to be heard clearly in my townhouse when I turned the TV off and loud enough to be very distracting trying to watch TV (granted I have good hearing). Surprisingly, while it was loud, not insanely loud in their house. Not even as loud as a movie theatre but well above normal TV volume.
 
Ask him nicely to turn down the gain on his sub woofer. Thats usually the offending source on a sound system. If that does not work. The IAC Gestapo will get him. Just document the times and some comment and forward to your IAC Staff. Thats my biggest gripe about IAC units. The noise supression in these "Apartment Homes" is non existant. As a downstairs tennent I hear my upstairs neighbors every footstep. Thankfully I am not home much and when I am its usually late so its quiet. When they built these places they saved plenty on not using much insulation or thicker plywood. I had a guy that lived above me last year. He had the cool habit of taking his trash out by thowing it over the balcony. Thus avoiding carrying it down the stairs. So one time I hear the "Clunk" and the bag has exploded and trash is all over the place. I walked out and just laughed as loud as I could while he picked up his garbage. Saddly we dont get to choose neighbors.
 
The IAC Gestapo sure got me. Someone walking by my unit (not even a neighbor) complained that my pet bird was singing too loudly. I got a call within 24 hours to quiet down my cockatiel or else. Has it ever occured to anyone that the little red IC logo, sunburst-type thing looks a lot like a swastika??
 
My sister used to do stuff like this as she is an acoustical engineer. Basically, you can call an acoustical engineering company and they can come out and measure the noise level. Then you can prove how loud something was and get it corrected. (Can't help you with this one though - doesn't work in California).
 
I like the IAC Gestapo if they take noise complaints seriously. Not to pick on cockatiels, but I used to live five houses down from a house that had a few cockatiels in a cage in their side yard, I couldn't believe how loud those birds were, and they were not the nice musical bird sounds, they were screeching and I felt sorry for their next door neighbor. Neighbors with loud wind chimes can be annoying too. Overall as far as noise levels go, I'm on the side of IAC. It's more frustrating when other apartment complexes do nothing for noise complaints.
 
How would you handle a neighbour that owns a small dog that barks whenever it is left alone in their house (hours at a time)? I have a 1 yr old who naps in the afternoon and goes to bed at eight and the dog constantly wakes her up. I approached the neighbour about the problem and she started yelling at me about having the right to have her dog bark as loud as she wants and that she would take me to court if I tried to do anything...she then started crying and blaming the dog barking on my indoor cat!

Two other neighbours who heard the incident also have complained to the HOA in the past month. The problem is still persisting.

Anybody else had to deal with barking dogs? I'm trying to take the high road and be polite... they are my neighbours. Maybe I should just invite Graphix over and tell him its open season ;)
 
amoul - We had almost the exact same problem, napping baby even, but without the HOA. I think we called animal control, and it turns out we weren't the only folks who had called. The owner ended up putting one of those shock collars on the dog and that solved the problem. She does not have the right to have her dog bark as loud as she wants. Take the road that benefits your 1 yr. old.
 
I live in IAC and had someone complain about me. Their bedroom was below my living room. I don't go to sleep till late and they went to bed at 7:30. I went down and talked to them about the complaint. I then told them you can transfer to any IAC as along you upgrade by $1.00. I told them which places were better built for noice. They we gone within two months. IAC has never called me again.
