More Rent Skimming to Watch Out For

I just got this notice from SoCalMLS regarding new rent skimming scam. Please note.

news story from San Diego about some

thieves who are using vacant houses with

combo lockboxes as the basis for their scam.

According to the reporter they might be moving

north since their cover was blown in San Diego.

Their MO is to find vacant houses on the

MLS using combo lockboxes, list the properties

for rent on craigslist, meet with prospective

renters, take first/last/security deposits and flee.

This is an old scam. It was covered in the LA Times a few months back.

I am sure it will show up in OC if not already, especially in Irvine, where people tend to be more trustful.

I actually think we'll see a lot of increase in rent skimming and renters being evicted from their landlord's foreclosure.

This makes a case for IAC living. Yes, you give up some privacy and pay more per sq. ft --- but at least you have some peace of mind.
