Monday Fun Day - Beating the Monday Blues

As a lifetime OC resident, I always find it a bit surprising when I talk to someone out-of-state and they say they want to relocate here come retirement age. I dream of selling the house, checking out, relocating to a golf course community in another state with a lower cost of living, quite possibly an age-restricted community, and making the most of what might be a fixed income.

Are you O.C. folks down for life? Have your bags packed the moment the kids graduate? Where to and why?

I'd like to get to the beach somehow... maybe downsize to a 2br condo with the Mrs.

Have the kids and grandkids visit to enjoy the surf and sand.

Doubt we would move out of the area... too many family and friends here.

my parents and in-laws are close to retirement and have no desire to leave LA/OC respectively.  money is important but whats the point of living alone and far from family?  they 100% plan on staying here close to their kids, grandkid, extended family, and friends.

obviously some cant afford to retire here and completely understand the need to move but you dont have to move out of state to cut down on costs.  for example, our friends grew up in turtle rock and once the parents were ready to retire, they sold the TR house and moved to placentia and are using the extra to fund retirement.  i know other families that have moved from OC to corona in retirement.  there is one street where our friends parents live where the entire street is indian or asian...

our family is in San Diego and near San Diego, our friends are in OC/LA/SD so we will be retiring to SD for sure. Heck we may move to SD in 7-10 years.

More in lines with IHO's plan. Beach- close to kids.
I don't see a point in living away from my children. I want to keep a spare key to their place, walk in anytime I want to, and leave a note to clean up/make their beds every day :-) I will be one nasty old woman!

And if the kids' schooling or jobs takes them to the east coast - will you follow? Will you relocate each time they do? No matter where? No matter how often? Or stay in OC and get on a plane to visit them? Families are so spread out these days.

East Coast is fine. Weather will make me a grumpy AND nasty old woman, but paranoid mother will be on their case forever.
Thank God I don't have a boy- no girl would have married him otherwise :-)
I do think of leaving everything and living like a saint sometimes though.

How often do you guys go to the beach? My out of state relatives always seemed surprised that we rarely go. They have this stereotype of Californians that we all drive convertibles, walk around in board shorts all day, and visit the beach frequently. We go once or twice a year. We have skipped years. The widened areas where you would have enough room to have a good time on the sand are so dirty and over-crowded, we don't enjoy it much. I would not miss the beach at all but as an out-of-state resident you could always hop a flight and visit whenever you get the hankering.

fair point socal78.  i guess we dont have that issue and most of our friends dont either.  we see more people coming here than going out.  my freshman year dorm wing had about 40 guys and 90% were out of state.  last i heard, more than half are still in SoCal 14 years later.

in any case, my point was not to suggest that people leaving dont care about family.  its that there are cheaper options nearby and you dont have to go far to enjoy retirement comfortably.

Spring to summer, at least every other weekend. Sometimes every weekend.
I want a beach condo though. I want to open the door to the balcony, and look at the ocean, hear the ocean.

Although the kids may end up elsewhere... most of my other friends/family won't... so we'll stay here so they can visit... everyone likes to visit Disneyland or the beach... and this way they don't have to rent a vacation home in Fullerton to do so. :)

And nowadays... I hear kids are moving back home after a college... so we need to keep their low-rent rooms available.

Purely out of curiosity: IHO, will you help them with down payment on their first house? :-)

I agree. Everyone who has moved to CA has stayed here. Very rare that someone moves out..

Well... it's not just the sand and surf.

It's the great weather, the different places to visit (as I said before... Disneyland is a huge draw), shopping, restaurants (can't find geoduck in many other states) etc. A relative of mine went to TX... came back in about 2 years because they couldn't stand it.

I guess Florida has the same things... maybe that's why Panda is in Georgia.

It's all about the WESSSAAAYEEEEEEED!

I think someone asked me this before (AZDave?).

I would want them to do it on their own... but if they need it... and I have it... of course.

Would probably prefer them to live with us until they can save up enough... but that has its own issues (who likes to see their IHOInLaw walking around in his underwear?).

SoCal78: Will the next question be about the 'exit plan'? :-) I have planned mine. Will write a thousand words if you prompt :P

Would love to read it. Consider this a cue.  :)

:-) Lets wait for the 'others' to talk about retiring and as the thread closes, I will bump it with the exit plan. It will be a grand affair though. I will keep a CD just for that purpose and give specific directions ;-)

at what age do you hope to retire?  and what do you consider retirement to be?  our definition is having house paid off, childrens college funds locked away, and having enough passive income that neither of us have to work to sustain our lifestyles.  to me, retirement isnt about not working but more about not having to work.

my parents have enough saved to stop working but they would be bored so my mom works part time and my dad teaches less classes...i think this is retirement for them.

52. That's when the younger one will be done with four year college. The house will be paid off, college expenses done with.
Passive income: where do you draw the line? Same with 529s. One year? Two years? Just to cover books and other expenses?
