Hutchinson made it clear in February that she didn't want to be VP. She's 65, isn't running for re-election as Senator in 2012, and there is a good chance she will run for Govenor of Texas in 2010. I think McCain knew better than to bother asking.

I think John McCain will get democratic women to vote for him. Republicans are far more loyal to their party so even if they don't like it they will vote McCain. I work with the elderly and the women want to see a girl in office before they die. Think about what the elderly women has seen in her life. The best part is they always vote. I like Obama but can he really do it?? His ideas sound great in theory.
 
from the stdpt of appealing to the republican base, i think palin was a great choice.

abortion? found out she her child would have down syndrome and still wanted the baby

war? her son is headed to iraq in sept

drilling? pipeline runs across her backyard for all she cares. she wants the jobs

she's bulletproof when it comes to these issues. who can debate her on these? the question of experience just generates the std response: "our vp pick? well what about your pres pick!"

the way this election will boil down, neither candidate needs to convice the general public to vote for him over the other guy. given the rifts within each party, the winner will be who appeals most to their respective base. will obama win over more PUMAS than mccain can with traditional conservatives who are still wary of him? palin will help imo.

OMG! Winex is Larry Kudlow! He is ranting and wailing on CNBC right now just like Winex. Wow, good thing Winex hasn't been doing the bullish rants about the stock market in the economy like Kudlow, because he would look pretty silly like Kudlow. Ignorance is bliss.

McCain has now shot himself in the foot. What he thinks that a woman VP is going to steal Hillary supporters? NOT. there are far more qualified woman governors and Congressional candidates than her, come on are you an idiot???

Well welcome Obama as President, as McCain is trying every way possible to not be elected President.

Okay, I have to retract my comment about alienating every social conservative; it's clear she will shore up support for the ticket in that area. It still leaves the Republicans with very little time to sell her as a valid candidate and there isn't a strong argument to be made by/for her inclusion on the ticket. Having thought about it for a bit longer, I do think this was a brilliant choice by McCain in the short-term. He's locked up the pro-life vote, the gov/social/fiscal conservative vote, the Republican women's vote, and practically erased any talk of Obama's incredible speech from the national media. From a purely politcal point of view, that's stunning.

She's been a 'darling' of the Wonkette blog since being elected Governor. That's where I first heard of her, and the GILF label.

Trooper, though Alaska and Delaware (see! I told you I wouldn't misspell it again) both have 3 electoral votes, the only thing that Biden adds to the Democrat ticket is a chance at those 3 electoral college votes.

Palin adds a lot more than that to the Republican ticket.

As someone who has lived most of my life in Arizona, I know John McCain well. I had vowed a long time ago that I would never vote for him again. I considered it easy to keep that vow in the coming elections. (Simply put, if my vote for Barr leads to Obama taking California's electoral votes, then it won't matter because McCain will have won the country in a landslide) But adding Palin to the ticket makes it possible for me to consider changing the way I vote.

I'm not sure yet, I do need more information. But it is possible now.

Gut reaction, no. Then again, we're still learning about her. She has to have some legit substance to receive this nod....time will tell.
 
good questions...Liz....but why Obama is so much more qualified? Obama never run a town, a city, or state? yes, obama is a US Senator, then he is a first term senator, and spent most of time while in senate trying to get to be president.

Maybe someone will say Obama is smarter? Oh, how do we know Sara is not smart?

Oh, ok...she has no foreign policy experiences. True...but I am sure she is no less incompetent than someone who thinks Iran is small, and pose no danger.

McCain might kick the bucket. Ok. she becomes the president. Well, then she can go hire a VP to help her out just like Obama is doing.

I guess we will see soon enough....
 
In terms of experience and qualifications, there's no comparison between Obama and Palin. Obama has 12 years of legislative experience at the state and national level, a stellar legislative record, top academic qualifications, and was already a leading political orator and writer before his campaign. He also defeated the best-known name in Democratic politics for the Democratic nomination. Palin has 2 years of state/national experience and her only memorable accomplishment has been to get embroiled in a small-scale scandal. Obama's qualifications arguably surpass those of many previous presidents, including Reagan and Lincoln. Palin, if she got the job, would be the least-experienced politician President ever.
