My sister in law recently expressed her displeasure in finding out that a student in her child's class doesn't live in the attendance boundaries of her school district. She feels that she sacrificed greatly by buying a small house in the district for big money so that her kids could go to school in this district (no, not Irvine, but an equally regarded district not in the OC). She struggled for a week or so before deciding not to turn them in, but I was very surprised at just how angry she became. How does everyone else feel about this since most of you live in a highly regarded school district?

Other possible reason (for some people): Their kid is a better athlete than your kid and starts over him/her on varsity. A friend of mine in high school was turned in by the parents of a bench warmer.

Here is a rule of thumb. When parents are this crazy about the schools the chances are the schools rank last in sports regardless of Varsity or not except for Badminton of course.

In this case, the team was highly ranked in CIF. The school district is really nothing like Irvine, but there are surrounding cities that are L.A. Unified, and I believe the girl in my example above lived in one of those cities.

If your kid sucks at a sport, he/she is not going to start, period -- even if you tattle on the kid from across the tracks?

In elementary I used a friend's address. I originally attended and lived in the area for that school, but moved into a more expensive community in the same city and wanted to continue attending. So it's not always cause some kid is poorer. Also, I knew people who used fake addresses to attend certain high schools for sports.

Thinking back, I don't know why my parents didn't just ask the district to let me continue.

As long as the kid using the fake address isn't bringing down API scores, slowing down the class or being a horrible influence on all the other kids, I wouldn't care.

It's not always a bad thing. What would the West Beverly newsletter have been like w/o Andrea Zuckerman?

This is only true when the crazy parent's and half the student body is asian. You also forgot golf, tennis, and ping pong.
 
I taught 5th grade at Rose Drive elementary in Yorba Linda briefly as an intern (Fullerton college program) back in early 1990's. If you asked me back then to act as an informant and turn in any of my kids suspected of living in another school district, I'd give you the finger.
