more than $5k? small claims court is very cheap to file, and once served, they may settle.

IMO it should be over $5k, but I need a professional opinion to figure out which route to take.

you will not be dealing with just the dentist, you are more than likely to deal with one of the extremely resourceful malpractice insurance companies. You will need to have a tight case to win. insurance company makes damn sure patients don't think this is a easy process, they usually fight all the way through unless they know you have a valid case. Even that, it is going to be long and pain process for you.
