Tour,

I don't mean to press the subject but would you mind share with us what sort of research you do? If you do not want to share, I do respect that decision.

I don't know if you have ever been to Shanghai, but I found Shanghainese is remarkably similar to Parisian. They treat outsider in almost the exact same rude manner. My wife often common once you lived in one giant city like Shanghai/Paris, you can pretty much apply the same thing to all the giant cities (except LA of course)

I do research in control systems and signal processing. I also did some research as part of my PhD study in biomedical materials and bio-informatics. For my new job, it won't be a researcher position though. I will be working for a investment firm. I will evaluate new technologies put forward by companies the firm is interested in, look at the risk, what kind of support they will need, what other technologies they will need, etc. Once the company decided to invest, I will be a part of the team in evaluating their performance. Most of the companies the firm is interested are in Asia since that is where all the EE research is happening (US is more geared toward web based application, etc)

Tour,

I think you are a very cosmopolitain person, but the two books I mentioned can be very useful esp about the work/corporate culture.

What the?....late 20s and has a Phd?

Ok, one last question. Asides from walking. What is the next best mode of transportation? I read you guys mentioned the subway. Is it easy to get lost on that system? I mean I would hate to be lost since I only have 2 weeks.

Take the Madeleine metro exist if you take the metro or Opera or Concorde, then go to Rue Saint-Honore. Truth be told, I thought South Coast Plaza looked better.

Subway is the best mode of transportation in Paris. If you take Taxi, sometime it will take you 20 minutes just to go from one end of the street to another. Subway will take you everywhere and one usually comes every two to three minutes.

I think we hijack this thread. For shopping, Try Frommer's "Born to Shop Paris". It is helpful. Big department stores: Le Bon Marche, La Fayette, Printemps have everything under the sun. I think the smaller boutique stores that are fun to explore. Marais has funky stuffs. St Germain has furniture and other high end clothing, shoes. Chatelet has lots of street/urban wear. Madeleine/Rue Royal: watches and jewelry. For antique, you can try marche aux puces.

Thanks for the info.

Ok, thanks! Are you serious about South Coast Plaza? I often say that to my wife. No matter which malls we go to. I think South Coast is the better of them all.

For high end name brand, you may find more selections in Paris, but in terms of exterior, South Coast is better (not to mention cleanness)

I seriously think my wife is going to Paris just to get a certain purse. I told her they sell them here. She says it's not the same. Hahaha.

I know how you feel, My wife got a bag from Paris that was supposely French only, and all the girls in South Coast went crazy when they saw it. I honestly can't tell, but evidently girls can

Reason,

South Coast does have a good selection (store variety) and is clean. But the shopping experience is very much "American" shopping experience. Rue St Honore is a pretty tony place and the shopping experience is different there. I would never stop into the Hermes store at South Coast but I shopped at the one on Rue St Honore and it was different. I think to compare South Coast Plaza and Rue St Honore is like comparing a MBZ AMG and a Maseratti Quatroporte. It is just a matter of preference.

The Golden Triangle (close to Plaza Athenee) is another good shopping area if you are into Euro designers. Big names like Dior, Zegna are all there. But nothing special there really.

To the person that whispered to me regarding my questions as stupid. I would love to whisper back but the system is not allowing me.
