So we actually IrvineHuskied it and did the LV/GC thing.
We weren't planning on staying overnight at the GC so we were dreading the 4 hour drive from LV to GC but ended up with another option, Grand Canyon West.
This is on the West Rim and a newer tour area. We originally we're thinking about going to the Skywalk but had no idea that it was not in the South Rim where most people go for the GC experience. When we saw a sign in Vegas saying that Grand Canyon West was only 2 hours away, I looked it up and found out that this was the same place where the Skywalk is. For those not familiar with it, it's a U-shaped glass/metal bridge that extends 70 feet out over the canyon:
Reviews for this part of the Grand Canyon were mixed, most saying that the Skywalk is a waste of money. It does get pricey, it's $43 per person just to get into the area, but that includes a shuttle bus that stops at 3 locations... Hualapai Ranch, Eagle Point (where the Skywalk is) and Guana Point (where you can do a mini-hike to a high-point of the canyon). To do the Skywalk, it's another $33 per person and aren't allowed to bring cameras or cellphones because they have photographers there who will take your picture for you (and charge you $17 each).
So it was expensive and you don't really have to do the Skywalk (but if you're there, you might as well). You can just get away with going to Guano Point. The views are awesome and the mini-hike up to the top of rocks at the point was fun:
(not my picture)
Grand Canyon West is a private area owned by the Hualapai native tribe so we didn't mind paying for all the different things. Despite the reviews, we thought the Skywalk was great and Guano Point alone was well worth the $43/person.
And, being only a 2 hour drive from Vegas, it works well as a day trip so you don't have to stay somewhere else for a night or two (and you can combo the Hoover Dam as it's on the way).
If you've already been to the South Rim, I definitely recommend a visit to Grand Canyon West as it's something different. You can also do helicopter tours and white water rafting if you're a Hidden Canyon buyer.
As for Vegas, finally took the kids to Circus Circus. They loved it... and kept asking to go back... but it is still stuck in the 1900s. We actually sat and watched a few of the free shows and they enjoyed that. Was able to win some plushes (which is why they want to go back)... but I don't think we would ever hotel at CC.
It's funny because the last time we took them, they were younger and didn't like it very much. Our youngest was actually reluctant to go but now they want to go back.
And we did so many things... I didn't have a chance to donate to the poker table... weird... Vegas and no gambling.
