Ok, let's meet on Sunday, Nov. 18th at 5pm at I Can Barbecue Korean Grill in Irvine off Alton/Jeffery.  I'll be in a Blue Macan S.

Fly out and join us.  ;)

I'd like to meet MoreKaos as well.

Sorry... I think there was some confusion but I won't be there (witsec is about protecting my anonymity :) ).

Plus I usually do KBBQ at lunchtime because it's too heavy for dinner (and usually after a lunch KKBQ, I don't have to eat until the next day).

Gonna have to take a last minute rain check bc one of my good friends has her birthday party this afternoon so I?ll head out there after my open house.  I?ll create a thread for a lunch outing at I Can BBQ for a weekend in Dec.

1. I do prefer being anonymous for the most part.
2. With rare exception, going to KBBQ without the family is considered cheating on the family.

I go to KBBQ without the family all the time. In the last couple years I've been with my SO once to try the one off Culver/5 freeway, we both thought it was just ok...we weren't sure why it was so hyped up.

Kang Ho Dong Baekjeong is okay..way overpriced.  They charge for a ton of stuff (like dried seaweed).

Meat quality is good but again..way overpriced.

I think it is popular with the drinking crowd and people who really like service at a Korean BBQ.

The pricing was one of the factors that made it OK, the other was they were overcooking the meat, I had to take it off myself...think I had previously posted that I'd rather go to Mastros over this spot since I could pay a little more and get something I'd enjoy a lot more too.  If we drank more at KBBQ it'd probably be comparable to Mastros pricing.

Has anyone tried Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ?

They have an AYCE option but it starts at $35 and goes all the way up to $55 (+$2 Fri-Sun).

We just did the brunch option where each person can select 2 different meats and then alacarted some other choices.

It's okay... for the money, KBBQ is a much better value.

I tried a few times and it was ok. My wife prefers it over KBBQ because it's japanese style bbq and she likes the garlic noodles and the other small dishes more than Korean banchans. It's also a lot less smoke and you wont go home with smelly clothes.

Gyu-Kaku offers mostly marinated meat (with heavy sauce)
I like my beef unmarinated. Best way to eat beef is just with some salt, which is why I still prefer KBBQ.

Our favorite remains Cham Sool Gol...they have two location: The OG one in Garden Grove and another one in Buena Park.  The GG one has a limited selection but good and relatively cheap.  We generally go to the Buena Park as there is more selection.  Both have Thrifty ice cream for dessert.

Honestly though, I am getting too old for AYCE Korean BBQ.  Prefer shabu shabu now.

I've noticed a general decline in quality at Gen BBQ in Cerritos.  When I visited recently they couldn't even cut meat or cook rice properly.  Maybe the experienced cook was off that day and they had some part timer in the kitchen.

For KBBQ I recommend Kang Ho Dong Baekjeong and Eight Korean BBQ in Buena Park.  Note that both places have tight parking, though for Eight BBQ you could park at the Church parking lot for dinner:

Eight Korean BBQ specialize in pork and is a chain with many locations.  For Japanese BBQ I liked Manpuku in Costa Mesa, though the manager and staff that I knew have all left or rotated to other locations.  Tsuruhashi in Fountain Valley is also decent, you can visit "Prehistoric Pets" down the street with your kids and feed the catfish:

Also in Fountain Valley, Sushi Koto does Sunday Brunch buffet.  Reservation highly recommended.  More items are avail (made to order) if you ask the waitress:

And if you're willing to make the drive, Maison Akira in Pasadena for Sunday Brunch:
