I was listening to the radio today and the dj was talking about Jeremy Lin, and how Kim Kardashian now apparently wants to date him. (I'm of course thinking, don't do it, Jeremy!) Anyway, the dj said something like, "I'm starting to think Kim is doing this for the publicity. Come on, Kim. He looks like a guy I'd copy off of on a math test in school." Do you think that's a racist thing to say?

There's been a few things about Lin that have been borderline racism.

The thing is... you can't really talk about his current fame without acknowledging it has partly to do with his race.

To me, what some people call racism today... is more like stereotyping. It's a very gray area... it does not necessarily equate to racism... it can... but it doesn't always. And many people are offended by stereotyping too (as exampled in the IHB/TI).

(and it is interesting that some think that certain races/ethnicities are okay to stereotype more than others... esp if you happen to be of that same background)

Agree with IHO. Not racist but stereotyping. At least the math nerd thing is kind of like a positive stereotype right?  In any event, Lin is more nerd than clooney. He is not a good looking guy.

I think he's kinda cute.

I wonder if he wears contacts? That would be awesome if he wore those black nerd glasses (with the tape on the bridge) that the fans seems to be wearing (isn't that kind of racist?):

It's even become his "Tebow"... called "linning":

So there will be all kinds of stereotypical stuff... like this Bruce Lee one:

Oh... what were Landry Fields and Jeremy Lin doing? That's their handshake... they are both "nerds", Fields is from Stanford and Lin is from Harvard:

Step 1: Two quick high fives on opposite hands.
Step 2: Landry Fields presents his hands to Jeremy Lin as though they are a book.
Step 3: Lin "pages" through the book.
Step 4: Fields closes the book.
Step 5: Both Lin and Fields put their hands to their eyes as though they are glasses.
Step 6: Both players "Remove" their glasses and put them into an invisible shirt pocket.

NERDS!

(I think they added a step where they both point to God, since Lin is a Christian)

Wow~! I can't believe how humble this guy is and he glorifies God for his success. I really like this guy ! :)

He will be very successful here and abroad. His Asian cult following is huge here, China and Taiwan. Global syndication and advertising would allow the TV network to earn a lot of money.

So will be become an NBA fan now?

So here's one that was done by ESPN, when NY lost their first game under Lin (and his 9 turnovers)...it only showed up on mobile browsers and they've pulled it and apologized:

I am surprised there is not more press coverage on such an offensive headline from ESPN. You know if someone wrote such a offensive term about an African American NBA player, we would see heads roll at ESPN and every network would have Rev Al Sharpton calling for an immediate boycott of ESPN. Where is the outrage from the Asian community?

Maybe it's being overshadowed by Whitney Houston's funeral coverage. There is a small blurb about it though on the front page on msnbc.com right now.

This gaffe was offensive, but it will end up giving Jeremy even more attention than he is already getting...so ultimately, this will probably be a good thing for him.
