Ittibitty backyard

So far Jasmine has been easy to maintain for me. I do prune heavily after each summer.
Rose was too hard for me- four of the plants died, and one is one the verge of death. It's not a fancy variety either- it's the iceberg rose that HOAs all over 92602 have maintained so well.

Waterfall
What did you do?

I've been trying to put a water feature into my backyard for years.

I had a rectangular block wall planter built (about 6ftx3ft) which I was thinking about lining with that pond liner and then putting small fountains in it but I think that would be too much work.  So I want to get one of those prefab ones that you can put against a wall but haven't found one that really says "IHO... BUY ME!".

I even had this grand idea of building my own sheer decent waterfall with copper and slate... but uh... then I woke up.

I have a prefab one thats faux rock.  It's against the wall and next to the birds of paradise and jasmines.  It's relaxing to hear it and to see it while looking out of your kitchen window.

My wife really wants me to build a Koi pond but with the amount of Asian neighbors we have, they might think its a fish market and start lining up at my gate to buy fish.

So is yours more like this:

I want something more like this, a sheer descent waterfall:

@Homer:

Did you get it locally? I want something like that... where I just have to put it down, fill it with water and plug it in.

You sound like a Santa Ana ghetto owner at least the homeboys keep the yard green with medicinal plants.

Got some planters with some sort of shrubs my father-in-law threw in.. don't care much for gardening... rest are pavers (now with weeds between them).. My next house, I'm gonna just pave the whole thing... pulled some nasty weeds yesterday (that came out weird..)  it was almost 3 ft tall..

Not all fountains are hassle free.
I fell into the same trap thinking it would be as simple as just adding water and plugging it in.
Turns out, it's more like maintaining a miniature swimming pool.
Requires cleaning almost every week or the leaves that fall in clog the pump.
The water is treated monthly to prevent scale and algae build up.
Submersible LED lights that light up the cascading water in the fountain at night need frequent changing.

Yeah... it depends on the model.

We had one that was like normal circular fountain that was pretty good as there was a screen filter where the water would go to the pump so leaves weren't a problem. The previous owner actually hardwired it to a switch inside the house so I can turn it off and on from there. We usually only put water in it and ran it when we were having company over... so maybe that's why we didn't have any maintenance issues.

Having the on/off switch for the fountain inside the house is a great feature.
It makes sense that you would run it periodically like family get-togethers or when you are entertaining friends.
Is running a switch from the fountain to the inside of the house something that?s easy to do?
Ours runs 24/7 during rain and windstorms, I would like to run it periodically as well.

I don't know... it was like that when we bought the house.

It looks like they used a buried steel pipe to run the line to the house and since it was in the middle of a concrete ring... it was part of their landscape plan. I think the fountain itself might have had a leak because the water would run out rather quickly (which you could tell from the inside because the fountain would make a gasping noise when it was dry).

A good sized pot should give the same results.
I ocassionally kill my plants with too much TLC.
Costco will get them in a couple of weeks. The plants from Costco rarely die :)
