Is Newport Beach better value than Irvine?

Does anyone know if they let your kid go to Irvine if you live in NB, instead of CDM?

This is better value then some of the houses that I've seen on Turtle Ridge.

But it is still about $500/sq.ft. That's too much. It will be much cheaper in a year and two.

not so sure i'd call it a better value. those mcmansions on newport ridge are mcmansions just the same, and if anything that community has far less character than TRidge. for an ocean view in pelican hill maybe...

That house is really nice.

In all fairness, I don?t know or follow the Turtle Ridge market but there?s no question Newport Coast or CDM is better.

What difference does the school system make?

Newport Coast and CDM are very affluent areas so schools are just as good if not better.

Private schools being the best!

I think my reservation is not the school district but changing school for my kid especially at the crucial age. Friendships have been made. At this stage of their life, it's the most important thing.

I also have 2 relatives that graduated valedictorians from CDM in the last few years, so I'm confortable with the school district. But my kids do know people who live in NB but send kids to Irvine school. I'm just wondering if they do make a swap.

I jumped the gun without understanding your situation.

Thought you were putting down those other school districts.

Changing schools/making new friends is very important issue and critical for kids.

Those are valid concerns which you?ve voiced.

...Private schools being the best!</blockquote>

Private schools are the best compared to what?... public schools, charter schools, homeschooling? I would encourage each parent to research their choices. Each type of school has their benefits and short-comings. Private does not always mean better. Technically a private school can be run by one individual without a school board or accountability. Many private schools do not have programs in place for students with special needs. In addition, teachers at private schools are not required by law to be credentialed. Some private schools have also done away with AP curriculum. There are many good private schools out there but parents really need to do their homework to find out what exactly the school is all about. I just wouldn't want anyone thinking more expensive always = better.

I don't have any kids. I carpolled over there from Huntington Beach (my friend's mom dropped us off). You can drive a nice car there so long as you are able to parking inside of the school grounds (only seniors could do that).

and do we actually have any data that Mater Dei is any better than X public high school?

do they report API scores? SAT scores? college acceptance rates?

I'm sure they score higher on the 'being nailed by the priest' rate, though!

did you 'forget' about all the kids who attended MD who settled with the diocese two years ago after they admitted to the years of sexual abuse committed by their employees?

to my mind, "growing up" is honestly assessing the good and the bad for any given situation, not going through life with rose colored glasses.

Fair enough. i didn't know that about MD. I thought you were being a wise ass making a blanket comment against Catholic Priests/Institutions. But in any event, I'm sure it was a painful experience for those involved, the "joke" wasn't very tasteful.

I went to 12 different schools in 5 different states by the time I graduated high school from all the moving my parents did. It's not a big deal, and develops character.

Good for you. I learned my lesson with the first one and I'm applying this lesson to the second child.

The first one would be at Harvard if we did not move. Ok, that was a joke!

I agree. I think it would be good if a kid went to school from K-12. Or at least K-6 at one school and 7-12 in a different area.

We all want an attachment to our neighborhood. I think a person can live in Santa Ana and love it if he feels connected to his surroundings.

On the other hand, you can live in Newport and not appreciate it if you feel isolated.
