Champps at the Irvine Spectrum Center is closing at the end of the week, the Irvine Co. and the restaurant confirmed Monday night.

Along with P.F. Chang's, the sports bar was among the first restaurants to debut at the center when it opened in 1995. It's unclear why it is closing. A manager at the restaurant said the bar's last day of operation is New Year's Eve. He declined to comment any further.

" Please Join us for our Farewell Blow-out Party on 12/31-it will be EPIC!!!," stated the chain's website.

Interesting. Although it seems like other restaurants are doing well (they just opened a Ruby's plus others in that area), Champps always seemed no-so-crowded.

Maybe the sports bar can't compete in that center since Fox Sports Grill couldn't last either.

Yes. And really, why go somewhere and drink with your friends when you can stay home and do the same for less money? If the food were better at sports bars than you can microwave / reheat in the oven / fry at home yourself, then there might be a value-add, but I can buy the same food items and beer at Costco and BevMo for less.
