Irvine-Riverside Tunnel

So this article in today's paper was interesting (yes... I still read a physical newspaper):

http://www.ocregister.com/articles/tunnel-232695-toll-tunnels.html

And I found this article that's 3 years old but has a little more about the technical details:

http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/transportation/4224670.html

I'm not a structural engineer but I wouldn't feel safe driving through that. It's only 12 miles and it's not a Chunnel (the train tunnel under the English Channel... which is also scary to me) but I just don't trust SoCal earthquakes and drivers.

Then again... I'm sure people said the same thing about flying in jumbo jets.

Rather than spending 8.6 billion - which we all know by the time is said and done will be 28.6 billion - on a tunnel, why not spend that money on bringing high wage jobs to the IE so people don't have to commute in the first place!

It's so simple, even a caveman could figure this one out - or a tunnel digger....

(PS - we also still get a physical newspaper. If you rolled up today's OCR it was thinner than I've ever seen it before.... )
