Irvine Obelisk

Speaking of theme towers, what is the significance of the obelisk in Irvine? Is there some symbolism involved? I've seen them in many places including:

Cell tower antenna is inside. TIC collects a lot of rent from this. Each receiver and transmitter encompasses a 120 degree direction so the total is 360 degrees. The result is a triangular structure. The Obelisk at the Spectrum is also an antenna. Even antennas follow the cookie cutter philosophy.
