Irvine Housing Dreams – Part 3

Piedmont is a separate (very upscale) city and Piedmont High is not an Oakland public school. The city of Piedmont has its own district.
It's still Oakland. And you said you remember a "news story" about a mugging a "couple" of miles away from million dollar homes in Oakland. Well, Piedmont is in an area of million dollar homes, and a mugging could happen a "couple" of miles away. You lived in the O for 14 years, did you ever get mugged? I lived there for 4 years, I was never mugged, nor did I feel like I would have been. And, surprisingly, I had a lot of friends and family who lived there, many still live there, and none of them have been mugged or a victim of a violent crime. The ones with kids, their kids are doing well. One is deciding whether to go to Stanford, or Harvard when they graduate from Skyline, er maybe graduated already... I need an update. It's a tough decision, when many of her friends from Skyline, Piedmont, and a few private schools have similar decisions like her. Saying you would never live, er visit Park Santiago/Floral Park because of the Santa Ana schools is very similar to saying you would never live/visit Piedmont because of the Oakland schools.

Traceimage, consider this is the "Gang initiation!" Irvine Style. but you survived! (Now you know why the street crime in Irvine is so low comparing with other cities! I know I know...I just got influenced by the FBI crime report from the media. )
is there any place really that secluded from lesser neighborhoods? there are $200k homes in santa ana within 5 miles of $2M homes in newport beach. there were 2 incidents recently of residents being mugged and beaten with bats on walnut in irvine. that puts the crime within a few miles of everyone that lives in irvine. there aren't many high-end communities in southern california that i can think of that are utterly secluded from areas with higher crime. PV peninsula is about as isolated as you can get but it's still flanked by LA's ghettos to the north. maybe coto de caza, so long as you don't consider mortgage fraud as crime.
We all see what we see and I still think you are in exception mode rather than rule mode (you really need to see "He's Just Not That Into You").
You yourself has admitted that the city of Irvine itself is planned well, the environment is safe and conducive to families and the schools are good (maybe not the best). You don't like the aesthetics but you can't contradict everything else you've said. I've lived in more urban areas and the difference between there and Irvine is obvious. The difference between most places in Santa Ana and Irvine is obvious. Just look at the home prices to tell you the story. I will not put my family in an LA suburb... nor will I put them in an OC ghetto. Whether or not you agree with me is moot... you can say I'm scared all you want... but the point is... it's what I prefer for myself and for my family. Every poster on the IHB has that right... and to start throwing around ignorance and lack of knowledge for that choice is hypocritical.

BK, you are a very knowledgeable person, and I have a lot of respect for you. So if you don't mind, entertain me for a moment. Lets just say your daughter is now 35 years old, married with KG kids. She and her husband have already decided to buy a house now in orange county (can't be talked out), they can comfortablely afford a house up to $1 million with enough downpayment to qualify for a normal loan. Where you would send them to look for their house? and Why?
North Tustin for more land, more house, and expansion potential. It is very accessible to many places just like Irvine. No HOA and Mello Roos. The only down side are for the most part Asian, pacific islanders and Persian neighbors have very bad taste aesthetic in home renovation. It is not a speculation the proofs are everywhere.
not a good mix of blacks or hispanics in the Irvine schools.
It was a little weird. The coach picked the teams and let his little girl pick all of her friends from preschool which happened to mean all of the little whities from Floral Park. He didn't even know the kids but it made for some funny stares from some of the other teams.

Actually, you have been taking some pot shots where you can. So to say that you have been respectful is disingenuous at best. If you want to leave, then that is your choice, you chose to dish it, now you are saying you can't take it.
And you really wouldn't send your kids to Piedmont High School? It kicks Uni's a$$ all day long in academics and scores. I would rather my kids go to Piedmont over any Irvine high school. You see why I question you?

And don't get hung up on the "moderator" title... I learned early on that all that really means is that they were one of the OG members or they specialize in a certain area of this forum. The only people who actually moderate are zovall and IR. If not for PeterUK... I may have not stuck around but I'm glad I did... you just need to get used to it.
I think that's the problem though here (as with most of the Internet)... the medium isn't really good for tone so it's hard to tell if "ignorant" is truly an insult or just word being used to catch someone's attention. I doubt graph actually thinks your ignorant... and if so... well.... your response just pwned him a bit*.

Is everyone done here? Looks like the coast is clear... I did not intend for the thread to insult or degrade Santa Ana.. again I apologize that I didn't do my research before hand and just assume they were moving to a place inferior to Irvine; all I know was that it was going to be a change.
It is so interesting that when I woke up this morning, that the number of peoples who poll that they make no apologies are the same as people who can find purpose wherever they live.
I guess that is just it… it’s still ALL about ME, wherever you live; and I guess I don’t want to live that way. Although I would love it, I would lose a greater sense of purpose. Everyone can argue about which cities are better, but bk is the only one that even remotely mentioned anything about making their communities better.
Believe me, I would love to hide behind my Orange Curtains, and forget about all the troubles around the world, let alone, what happens in Santa Ana, work hard, raise my family and enjoy my hobbies… I guess that is what Irvine is great at… Pay someone else the $ and they take care of everything, the yard, the streets, the master planned environment.
I guess that is what I’m struggling with. I talked to a brother, he said that I’m making too big of a deal; we can’t save the world, may as well, just do the best job as possible to bring value to this world with what you do (profession), make that your ministry to talk about being a positive influence in your circle. Basically option #3 on the poll… I can live with that, but I’ll be afraid that I’ll just get too comfortable and complacent in Irvine

And Graphrix, I would like to point out that if it had been ME that was wrong about Piedmont High School instead of you - calling it a part of Oakland Unified when it is not - you'd be running up and down the halls calling me ignorant and complaining about how all this ignorance was about to make your head explode, or something. I'm glad ignorance doesn't affect me that way. And I'm sorry we got off on the wrong foot, because now it looks like we're not going to be friends and if I see you on the street, I might have to run the other way. Screaming.
My whole point in my original post is that I don't want to live in a city that is overall what I would consider not nice, even though I acknowledged that there are nice parts of said city and some nice schools (at least in the case of Santa Ana). Here is my testimony being a resident of Santa Ana. When my work was in the Artist District for 3 years I left my office no earlier that 9pm everyday. I walked the street alone. I live in Santa Ana and I walk the street everyday. Majority of the crime are committed against acquaintances, families and friends. Victims were rarely random and involved strangers. Santa Ana schools are under-achievers. OC is a charter school in Santa Ana with remarkable test score performance and Some Caucasian families living in Floral Park, Park Santiago, and West Floral Park send their kids there.
TV reporters often staged their reporting from SA even though the crime incidents were committed somewhere else like Newport Beach and Irvine. The Courthouse is a very popular staging spot. The Chinese man who committed suicide with an icicle gun was pronounced dead in a "Hospital in Santa Ana". The investigative team involved the County coroner of OC from Santa Ana and Police team from Tustin and Orange.
Crime scenes occurred in a residential neighborhood in a new suburb then the reporters were not allowed to report the name of the villages and especially the name of the project. The protocol is to report the incident in this manner: 1300 blocks of Acacia lane near Birch Road. No cameras were allowed to show the monument signs either.
If the media fear is how one judges other cities then your circle would be confined to a 7mi x 7mi walled city and may be every now and then a few vacations to the islands. The world is pretty small don't you think?

And my lack of desire to live in Santa Ana is not because of paranoia, fear, the heebie jeebies, ignorance, Latinos, or whatever. It's just not my thing. It doesn't mean my life experience has been limited. I'm still totally willing to drive through Santa Ana for a short period of time to visit someone, as long as I was with an armed escort. Kidding. But then, nobody I know would dream of living in Santa Ana. Kidding again. But as for Oakland, I've been there, done that and I don't want to do it again.

tmare's experience with having a Little League a team of ten blond heads seems kind of weird to me because when you look at the ethnicity/racial makup at the schools in santa ana a lot of them say 95% hispanic. I wouldn't want my kid going to a school that was 95% of any race - asian, white, black or hispanic. One thing positive you have to say about Irvine is that your kid will go to school with a good mix of different groups.
