Irvine Housing Dreams – Part 3

Irvine123 is totally spot on why Irvine is extremely successful targeting its buyers. It is by far with the money spent the RE is a sound investment. To me an investment is where the homeowners do not intend to live in it forever and eventually sell it. Many homeowners sell their homes after the kids completed HS and pursue their real dream home. Irvine is an excellent location to buy an interim home and get a pretty good chunk of change when selling it in the future.

Is it not possible that the pastor never referred to it as a sacrifice but RC just perceives it as one?

Absolutely, and I'm certain that's exactly the case. Note:

The initiative really touched me. What I like about our church is that our leaders don’t just preach about helping the poor at the margins of society they actually live it out.

Also note the guilt laden poll questions. RC is struggling with a perceived issue because he perceives the Pastor is doing something inspirational by moving from the perceived upper middle class Irvine to the depths of the underbelly of - gasp - Park Santiago. The reality is the Pastor is swapping one isolated quiet middle class neighborhood for another of similar quality - sans the "Irvine" stamp of purity.

I'm anxious to see why RC thinks he's moving to the ghetto. I'll bet a round of drinks (ha!) it's because the Pastor sold it that he was. RC put way too much effort into this series of polls and his responses to misinterpreted this. IMO.

Wow, I wish more of my threads caused this much conversation... Socal said it.. I perceived the sacrifice, he didn't mention it at all; like I said, I don't know how Park Santiago is like, I just assumed that it is nothing like Irvine, my bad... Socal said it again, it is a sacrifice for moving your family regardless; even though the girls haven't started elementary school yet, that should be a big change. A large point I was trying to make, what inspired me more than comparing cities, is that I'm so set on living out my Irvine dream that I have trouble flowing with what & where God might be calling me... On the other hand, this pastor IS willing and obedient

I have to admit he will have a challenge on his hands finding the right schools for his kids, not that there aren't good options, but you don't send your kid to the school in

the neighborhood when you live in Park Santiago like you probably would in Irvine. If he needs any help navigating the schools, public or private, just PM me. Contrary to what you may hear on this site, there are still some good schools in Santa Ana and part of Park Santiago is in the Orange school district. It's something he's going to want to start researching now. I can't believe my little guy is headed to Kindergarten this fall, it happens so fast and we have been figuring out where he will attend for three years now.

RC- I can understand your perception of your pastor moving from Irvine to Santa Ana as a 'sacrifice'. But when you have time, visit Park Santiago. It's near the Main Place. A very charming neighborhood. The type that you can envision putting out the Christmas lights during the holidays. Believe me, your pastor is not really making a 'sacrifice' by moving to Park Santiago. Now if he was to move to neighborhoods near Mcfadden/Bristol. Then I would say he's a true believer. Haha!

I have visited Floral Park, Washington Sq., West Floral Park, and Park Santiago. All wonderful neighborhoods.

Where as this is just one house I found in Park Santiago...



is see it's not as cheap either... I have to say, it's lovely, and charming, believe me, my wife and I loved our old 50's long beach apartment, but once we moved to Tustin Ranch, we just couldn't go back... well ok... it's hard to go back... it's hard to give up the newness

I have to say, it's lovely, and charming, believe me, my wife and I loved our old 50's long beach apartment, but once we moved to Tustin Ranch, we just couldn't go back... well ok... it's hard to go back... it's hard to give up the newness

I'll have to admit older neighborhoods have more interesting architecture, but there can be substantial costs to living in an older home: mold, termites, aluminum wiring, bare wiring, asbestos, lead, oxidized iron pipes, ghosts, etc. For busy people with small kids, newer homes can be much more user friendly.

Reason, you are right, the building that our church bought is:

It looks like an old firehouse; but it's right in the middle of an artist district... which should be fun on a date night, I guess.. with a stroller... is there a Starbucks near there... how about Wahoos... we should get out of Irvine once in a while

Umm, that's not the artist district (which is several blocks to the south west). That's in the heart of the ghetto, just north of of the Gonzales Northgate market where I get my tomatillos. I'd love to push a stroller there, if the stroller is armored.

I actually took a little tour of Park Santiago at lunch after I went to the Santa Ana DMV and I have to admit that I like what I see. Large streets, well manicured front yards, cops waiting at stop signs to give tickets out, nice single story homes with large lots, and mature trees. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised.

BTW, BK, would you like to create a contrasting view of Irvine and No. SA? I'd love to see the pro/con list side by side for both.

My favorite thing about No. SA is the 99 Cents Only store on the corner of Main and 17th.

Uhhh, you're good. Oh you're good, RC. No, do not take a nightly stroll in that part of town. Especially with the baby. Your wife will kill you.

Ok, let me rephrase. My ideal neighborhoods would be Northern S.A. with the safety factor of Irvine. If you were to compare the charms of Irvine's older neighborhoods vs. Northern S.A. older neighorhoods. I would choose S.A. But....with the safety of Irvine.

Again, do not venture at night near downtown. Yes, I am a wimp. =)

I will admit. I often take a stroll on 3rd/4th St. between Ross and Main St. in Santa Ana. I'ld go and grab a taco and just walk around and enjoy the scenes. I like looking at the older buildings of years gone by. The pedestrians are predominantly working class families. I felt very safe there.

Do you see now how a frontal garage could make such a negative impression for people judging the quality of the neighborhood eventhough the agent's nice Mercedes is parked in front of the house and did not help to boost the house status.

Yes, Bk. I did that comparison with homes in Corona and Washington Square. Subconsciously, I disliked the Corona homes due to the frontal garage(s). =)

My office was in the Artist Village for three years. I often left there between 9pm and 1am. I saw no problem there and I felt safe. The bars and restaurants were busy and Police station is just around the corner at Civic Center. The best kept secrets in OC besides the one evening a year invitation only event 30% on all LV handbags are these pockets of Old Downtown and nice charming neighborhoods.
