IRVINE ? Eight apartments were damaged and six people were displaced in an early-morning fire that authorities said was difficult to extinguish and maneuver around.
As firefighters looked for the source of the fire in a first-floor apartment at the 3700 block of Parkview Lane, they had to squeeze through tight spaces around boxes and other personal belongings that were stacked up to the ceiling, said Capt. Greg McKeown of the Orange County Fire Authority.
"It was very tight," McKeown said. "They had to go single file in tight corners around boxes."
Firefighters were called at 4:45 a.m. when the female resident of the apartment was awakened by a smoke alarm. More than 40 firefighters from the OCFA, as well as an engine from the Newport Beach Fire Department, responded to the complex.
The fire was able to reach into common walls of the apartment, several other units also suffered smoke damage, McKeown said. Eight apartments were damaged overall, though only six of the units were occupied at the time.
Investigators are now looking into the cause and origin of the fire, but most of the damage appears to have taken place in the kitchen.
McKeown said he was not sure how much firefighting efforts were hampered by the crowded apartment, or whether other units might not have been damaged if access had been easier.
No one was injured in the fire.
