There has been a lot of wedding pictures on the IHB these days; some of interracial couples. Irvine has always pride itself of being a “Global Village” of diversity. Although that may or may not be in comparison to other cities in OC and beyond; how much of this diversity cross over into long term relationships and marriage? I just have to take a poll.

The following are examples of the options.

Same Ethnicity; same Culture – Our friends from church who live downstairs, are both 1st generation Taiwanese-Americans. They both came here roughly in their teens (high school) and went to college in the bay area. They married a couple of years ago and moved to Irvine; they don’t have kids yet.

Same Ethnicity; different Culture – A couple comes to mind; I know of a white pastor from South Africa who married a native OC lady. They live in Orange and have one daughter. They are both Caucasians but they are very different culturally.

Different Ethnicity; same Culture – Another friend from our small group comes to mind. She’s Caucasian from northern California and he’s African-American from Alabama. They live in Long Beach and also don’t have any kids yet.

Different Ethnicity; different Culture – One of my high school friends comes to mind. He’s ABV – American born Vietnamese who married a 1st generation Korean. She barely spoke English when they meet 6-7 years ago. Although they are both consider Asian; I still consider them different ethnicities. They don’t have kids and are actually doing great the last time I spoke to him!

Personally, I guess we fall somewhere between Different Ethnicity; same Culture and Different Ethnicity; different Culture. My wife is Caucasian born in Whittier; and raised in the OC; while I’m 1st generation Taiwanese American. Our family immigrated to the states in the early 80’s. My first culture is Taiwanese, but I’m pretty much Americanize.

I realize there isn’t an option for multi-ethnic and multi-cultural couples; I think the poll would just get too complicated, besides there isn’t room for that. You can respond with a reply for your situation. Thanks…

Creole - different culture - 2 years

Caucasian -same culture -2.5 years

French - what category would that fall under? - 8 months

Black - different culture - 1.5 years

Black - different culture - 1 year

Latina - different culture - 2 years

Latina - different culture - 1 year

Caucasian - same culture - Married -2.5 years

Latina - same culture - 1.5 years

Latina - same culture - 2 years

Now, can you guess my race?

I can't respond to this poll, I was born a multi-racial person and I married a multi-racial person. There are at least 20 traceable ethnic groups in my children, I suppose the question "What is your nationality? (I hate that question) will probably become obsolete in the years to come.
 
Why is it that a majority of Asian interracial relationship are Asian women with other non Asian ethnicity and seldom Asian men with other non Asian ethnicity ?

Actually these were all long relationship's other than a couple under a year. With my chosen profession I have relocated many times to include overseas.

Not a player, really quite the home body and for what ever reason we did not pull the trigger to marry. In fact, I envy those of you that have been married for awhile. Yes, I have some great stories from my travels but will grow old alone with no kids.

How do you know? You might be 44 but you're not dead yet. Sometimes life will throw you some curve balls.

Geez, you've decided this at 44? My 42 year old brother will be getting married in August and I'd bet money his wife will get pregnant on the honeymoon, you just never know!

Very true. But I plan on marriage then children if it is in my future. With that being said, I imagine that I will most likely marry a lady with children.

Good question, for me the schools would not matter other than the area is clean and once the economy pick ups that maybe I would see some appreciation upon selling the home.

As for timing in buying a home, I will hold off awhile longer based on the fact that I may pick up and move if the right opportunity presents itself. Because of my lack of a formal education I have to depend on my work experience to climb the ladder within the industry I am in.
 
working poor: Find yourself a young lady who has child-bearing years left. I don't mean this to sound the wrong way, because I certainly didn't plan it... but from personal experience - I married a guy who is 10 years my senior and it works out great. You get the financial stability of the older guy without having to beat the reproductive clock. I think it's a great design. (I don't mean the extreme of old grandpa and barely-legal girl. haha)

My brother's fiance is 33 years old, I, too, think it's going to work out great for them.
 
You guys are not going to make me lay on a couch and charge me by the hour are you?

I think the next poll should be "How old is to old to have children" for a man vs. a woman.

Do not get me wrong, I enjoy children, I do not know how many of my friends kids call me Uncle Mike. At this age the woman I am interested in/meet have children that are teen's or out of the house and they do not want to start over with a new baby.
 
Instead of the grandmas, start looking younger. Don't underestimate yourself and think a young lady will not be interested in you. You would be surprised! Have confidence. I think a lot of younger women gravitate towards more mature men. Give yourself a chance. A young lady will make you young again and give you a new lease on life.

Thank You Amy Tan: Support the Joy Luck Club!

Asian doll. Tight, submissive, exotic, mysterious and sultry. She shrieks at the sight of a mouse. She takes insults as a reminder to improve upon her flawed self. She is the survivor of abuse by Asian men from her past, just as she watched her mother abused by the hands of her father. She endures. She sits quietly alone, waiting for her White knight to sweep her away from generations of misery. Who is she?

She is a fantasy Asian woman created by Amy Tan to get Asian girls into the hands of the White guys like us.

My campaign, or better put, my goal is simple: to promote Amy Tan’s Joy Luck Club in the reading lists of high schools and universities across the nation to get more White guys like myself with Asian girls. Right now, the Joy Luck Club (JLC) is currently used by academic institutions in the US and is known by us White guys as a novel that is “Draws Asian girls to [us]“. Through Amy Tan and her novel, the images of self-loathing Asian women and abusive, wicked Asian men have reached the millions across the nation, much to our favor.

In my campaign to promote JLC for schools, I have enlisted the support of Asian-American women’s groups, fraternities, pornographers, the Republican Party, and any Asiaphile group of every feasible nature. I am not looking to wipe out all Asian males nor am I looking to ignore White women. I just want more Asian girls to learn about Amy Tan and her wonderful novel so more White guys like me can enjoy them.

What I love most about her is the way she plays upon all of the Asian stereotypes. Asian women are depicted as lonely miserable characters whose ultimate salvation comes when united in marriage with a White male (us). Furthermore, she mercilessly smears all of the Asian male characters, confining them to the role of the wife-abuser, pervert, weakling or the nit-picking egomaniac, which is party true from my own observations. This novel really represents the Asian American experiences and it is loved by critics, in addition to being popular with Asian girls and us White guys.

Amy Tan (who in real life was swept away by a white man) said herself that she would never date Asian men because she would not date her father or her brother, and this only helps our cause. I truly respect and believe her as a major figure of the collective voice of Asian-Americans and I really don’t think it’s right to question her thinking because that would be racist.

When chatting with Asian girls of every background online, they all said that the story is a major reason why they only date White guys. I must confess that there were parts to JLC that I could relate to, such as the generational and cultural gap the main characters felt with their parents. Nevertheless, alongside these anecdotes came, what I felt, were interesting generalizations that brought back memories of the abusiveness and arrogance that I faced from Asian nerds and thugs in high school.

So long as JLC and Amy Tan are the only widely recognized products of Asian American literature, Asian girls will date us more. I hope others will enjoy reading Amy Tan because she is both a very engaging writer and gives us a the truth at what Asian women had to suffer from in her pages.
