I think the ad hurts ATT more than Apple. I would imagine Verizon execs would love to have the Iphone in their stable. Who knows the rumors of 2010 Verizon Iphone may be true.

Qualcomm is producing a hybrid radio to work on both GSM & CDMA thus the <em>World Iphone</em> may be a reality soon (<a href="http://www.iphonefaq.org/archives/97719">http://www.iphonefaq.org/archives/97719</a>).

The other rumors are that we will have a 2010 Verizon Apple Tablet using 4G/LTE speeds (data only. no phone function) and 2011 a full 4G/LTE Iphone capable of running on both ATT & Verizon (<a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/07/24/source-verizon-hurrying-to-launch-lte-by-early-2010-perhaps-for-apple/">http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/07/24/source-verizon-hurrying-to-launch-lte-by-early-2010-perhaps-for-apple/</a>)

My brother and one of my best friends both bought first gen iPhones. Talking to them instantly became impossible. You either couldn't hear them (tons of background noise), or the dropped calls were awful. My brother got a new iPhone two weeks ago and its a vast improvement, but he still drops calls like a madman.

I need a phone that can <em>gasp</em> make and take phone calls. All the extra stuff is neat, but my cell phone's primary function is make calls (plus I need to have a real physical keyboard). And tolerate being dropped a couple of times a day (by me, not the carrier).

Maybe. But its not AT&T thats on the Island of Misfit Toys. So.... keep dreaming. Apple doesnt take kindly to this type of of nasty. And they just sued Verizon for the "We have a map for that" commercials... so we will see. The world iPhone already exists since no major country outside the US uses GSM.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the iPhone as a device. But I don't feel like buying one at full price in order to try to Jailbreak it either. AT&T's network is substandard.

Umm, the majority of Europe, China, India, and Australia all use GSM. It's CDMA that isn't worldwide, mostly Central and South America, and that's Verizon/Sprint tech.

Also, it would be terribly short-sighted of Apple not to already have phones ready to go when their exclusivity agreement with at&t ends, because they'd be thumbing their nose at 50+ MILLION potential customers. So far they have proven that they care more about market share than carrier loyalty.

It's actually <a href="http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/11/03/att-declares-color-war-on-verizon/?ref=technology">AT&T that is suing Verizon for the the Map ads</a>, NOT Apple. I am sure Apple execs are furious at AT&T for not having a more robust network. The numerous complaints by Iphone owners are vastly more related to network issues rather than hardware/software issues. It is AT&T that is ruining the reputation of Apple. The Iphone is both a curse and a blessing to AT&T. Yes they get millions more new customers but those same customers are high data users that severely tax their network. They are also very vocal critics of AT&T service. I think given a choice of providers, many current Iphone customers would choose Verizon.

"I think its safe to say that Apple will never do an iPhone for Verizon" -- I would rethink that...

Here?s the situation. Despite only effectively offering one model of iPhone Apple?s already made it into the top three handset makers on a global basis, despite competition from multiple products from other manufacturers (there?s more than one BlackBerry, after all). So, what?s a company going to do to maximise its reach? Diversify its product line, that?s what - just as with the slow extension of its iPod family.

Here?s the news: Overnight reports are claiming the company is developing a smaller, CDMA-compatible device for Verizon (and other CDMA networks), a device it intends releasing in Q3, 2010.

This rumoured device would host a Qualcomm hybrid CDMA/WCDMA chip and have a smaller 2.8-inch screen.

It?s by no means the first time Apple?s been rumoured to hold plans for a smaller device. The Dally Mail made such claims last year, speculating (incorrectly) that this would ship then.

We ourselves saw signs of this way back in April 2008, when we reported claims Apple has a smaller device in development.

Despite wide resistance to these notions in 2008, 2010 will see Apple?s competitors intensify in their attempts to take on the iPhone, and diversification of the product line is just one potential response available to company management.

NB: Image used here is of an old edition iPod nano, and purely for illustrative purposes, it is not purported to be an image of this rumoured iPhone nano device.

That site has a good track record. The ad says "great 3g phone" without great 3g coverage....

my prediction: July 2010 iPhone mini -- free with contract

iPhone pro -- $399 with contract.

Verizon is rolling out it's new LTE network in the 700Mhz spectrum in a few months. I'd expect any device from Apple to be on that standard, rather than Verizon's current 3G incarnation of CDMA.

For those who are willing... any device to be sold in the US has to get approval from the FCC first, meaning you can <a href="http://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/ApplicationSearch/searchAdvanced.jsp">search their database for applications</a> if you know what name they applied under or their specific FRN number. which can usually be found on the sticker with the Serial Number.
