so when the lakers season is over, i want to dump my uverse and try to use a outdoor antenna + redbox + whatever i can get on the internet to satisfy my 3-4 hours of tv i watch a week (not worth paying $100 a month for the tv part).  so my question is how do or can i tap into the wiring for the inside of the house so i don't have to run my own coax?  i have a newer home in san mateo.  is it as easy as just running a coax from the outdoor antenna that i buy and connecting it to one of the ports in that box on the side of the house that the uverse currently comes in from?

Yep... I believe it's that easy.

But you have to check with San Mateo HOA to see if you can have an outdoor antenna.

Doesn't satellite TV only cost about $30 per month?

like IHO said, it is that easy. when they installed the uverse, they connected all the appropriate wiring in the master bedroom closet to make sure you get the tv at the right outlets.  so if you just plugged in your antenna to where the uverse currently is, you should be good to go.

i think there are laws against hoa's preventing this, in any case i plan to use a tripod on the ground

update, found the link:http://www.fcc.gov/guides/over-air-reception-devices-rule

reason why i'm going to use a tripod is because I don't want to drill into the side or the roof of the house

You're probably get horrific reception for a ground mounted antenna.  Antennas need elevation to pull in the signals from LA and beyond.  Let us know how it goes, I'm curious to see how many channels you'll get.

You should have a media box on the side of your house where the cables comes from the street to your house.  Mine is next to the main circuit breaker on the side of the house.  Or they have a run from your close to the roof for people who want satelite.  You can probably use that to mount an external antenna.

If you want to be shady...pop out at 2AM, and tap into your neighbors cable at the box on the street.  8) :o

We have an antenna (with an amplifier type) put into the attic and connect to the cable in the master bed media box switch board. And if you put it towards the Northwest direction, the results will be just as good so that you don't need an outdoor antenna.
BTW, this is all done by my teenager boy so I would say it's not hard at all.
In the media box, there is a string that can help you to pull the wire through to the attic.
