Yes we had some guys out at 29 Palms and at Oceanside doing scavening during life fire excerises. It was very, very stupid. Even when confronted by a TANK full of marines, they were billigerent. Several times those bozos have hit old mines, old unexploded ordnance. Heaven forbid that one of them actually get hit by a 155 or 120 round. There would not be much left.
Any buddy has a electrical maintence company, he gets 1-2 orders a week to go out and fix a electrical box/transformer. those things are very, very dangerous. 1.44KeV (14,400 volts at HIGH amperage), it usually blasts the guys right out of their shoes if they get grounded....

I think the main issue with some people in OC is the "working poor" syndrome. They're unable (or unwilling) to reduce their living expenses and expectations. For those in poverty, there are many government and private charities catering to them, but they don't always have access or knowledge to obtain help. Also, it's not easy to run charities due to legal/liability issues.
I did some volunteer work for "Project Angle Food" recently, cooking in their kitchen to prep ~1,400 meals daily, delivered to the needy. To be a volunteer you had to sign legal docs and waver forms. To actually qualify for assistance, you have to fulfill a long list of requirements, including a qualifying health condition, consent form signed by your doctor, proof of residence, proof of income, client agreement, consent agreement, etc. Click on "English" link in follow web page to see the actual forms:

IMO their work is very admirable, worthy of your time and donations. But using Project Angel Food as an example, you can see how difficult it is for someone who is poor and suffering from a serious illness would 1) learn about their existence, 2) qualify for their aid, and 3) swallow their pride to apply for food charity.
When the employment market tanks, I don't think the big national players feel it as bad. My local OC guys came out of TEK, and you don't get much bigger than that around here, and they are NOT getting a lot of placements right now in SoCal. Their guys have seen their commissions fall off considerably.
Lots of small and mid-sized companies are getting destroyed. We've heard of a number of smallish staffing/placement/consulting/offshoring firms that have already shut the doors... For the small to mids, its going to be a matter of how long employment stagnates and how big a warchest those companies have accumulated to help them ride it out.
We're discussing major operating cost reductions this weeks with the hope that we can another 3-6 months of operating longevity.
Great points. I think it can be difficult for many Americans (I say Americans, because not all, but most are born in a pretty good situation compared to others in other countries) to all of a sudden kick into survival mode because of how they were raised. Most Americans are raised with basic needs easily covered and some. So when they have to kick into survival mode, many don't know where to begin or like you said have too much pride to even go there.
It might be easier for me to wear same clothes over and over, eat rice and beans for a year, and pick cans on the street than perhaps someone born in a family with higher status. Or someone never having to live life that way.
It's funny though. When I came to America and had to pick cans, I would be so thankful because I had so much more than people back in my country. And when I lived in my country, I would be thankful I had parents who took care of me and love me, because I knew orphans who were abandoned by their parents and had to tough it out on their own. Once these kids got older and kicked out of the orphanage; boys went to various crime activities and girls to prostitution or were victims of sex trafficing.
Point here is that no matter how bad things are...there is always someone going through alot worse. Like someone not being able to cover basic needs of life like food and water.

are things that bad for IT employee contracting sales? I have a good friend in sales for a national firm similar to yours HQd in Irvine and he mentioned he is getting lots of placements right now.
Regarding jobs, I'm in sales for a Fortune 50 HQd in Silicon Valley. Business is down but we're still wildly profitable. In general, the last two groups to ever get touched in high tech are top engineering talent and top sales talent. Even better when you're in sales with an engineering degree.
On another note, I had been contemplating an executive MBA, but am now reconsidering instead pursuing an MS in Computer Engineering.

I'm thinking we should start a thread on "What to do if you're laid off", with info on job openings, agencies, counseling, etc.
Then maybe a separate thread on "Help for the poor", if you know anyone who has recently fallen into poverty, or "survival mode", with info on welfare and charity groups with OC Rescue Mission.
We could also get a IHB volunteer group together to assist in food preparations at various charity organizations, soup kitchens, and food banks.
