House of the Dragon

Hope everyone enjoyed the first episode. I loved the opening scene with Princess Rhaenyra flying her dragon around the Red Keep.

Here is a new trailer showing scenes for the coming weeks:

Does it matter if I have not watched the original GoT? I heard the show went down hill after they ran out of source material like after season 5 or season 6?
Yes first episode of House of Dragon did look good. I plan to keep watching but I have many seasons of GoT to catch up?

House of the Dragon takes place about 200 years before Game of Thrones, so it doesn't matter if you've watched GoT.

And it's true that GoT went downhill after they ran out of source materials. I was very disappointed with how D&D just mailed it in in the final season because I'm a huge A Song of Ice and Fire fan. Unfortunately, I'll never get to finish reading the books since it's been 11 years since book 5, A Dance With Dragons, came out and it's extremely unlikely that Martin will ever publish book 6, The Winds of Winter.

It's not necessary to watch GOT but it makes it more fun. There are a bunch of Easter Eggs in House of Dragon referring to the original series. They even remixed GOT music.

Yeah... you can watch HOD if you haven't watched GOT.

You will just miss some of the family name references and terminology but can catch on.

I found it interesting that it's almost like how the prequels of Star Wars were more advanced than the original trilogy.. the armor looks nicer, the sets are nicer. Compare the HOD joust scene to the GOT joust scene and you can see what I'm talking about.

The production cost went up so much that the per season number of episodes was cut short, from 10/season down to 6/season.

Spoiler alert?

Such a bad ass scene when rhaenyra and her dragon emerged from the cloud for the ultimate flex. Instant classic.

I agree. Looking forward to many dragon battle scenes.

Funny how the male actors stay and the female actresses get changed out.

The male characters were already adults at the beginning of the series. Rhaenyra and Alicient were like 12-14 at the start.  There's already a, what, 4-5 year time skip up to ep 5. There is another time skip in ep 6. Can't really keep Milly and Emily as early to mid 30s women.

They blew the CGI budget on dragons. Nothing left for aging the actresses.

At least we are getting a full 10 episodes.

Part of the problem with S7 and S8 of GoT was the pacing and cramming the story into less episodes (although some episodes were longer but still shorter overall viewing time for the season).

Spoiler:

I thought the King finally died... but that guy just keeps going.

The real problem with GoT S7/S8 is that D&D already mailed it in. They already moved on to another HBO series, Confederate, which ultimately didn't move forward due to their $200M deal with Netflix.

Episode 6's immolation by Vhagar was brutal.
