For new homes.. they have that openHouse box or whatever you call it inside your master bedroom closet.  Can you just plug your router in here?  There are RJ45 connections through the house.  Hope this makes sense.
 
while yes you can, the box isn't good for reception if you plan on using your wireless router in there.  You'll most likely need a repeater somewhere else in the house.

 
I was thinking that.  Wish there was a better way than using a repeater.
 
So how I rigged mine up was I just put a simple 8 port Gigabit switch inside the box and placed my router in a central location.  Tested everywhere in my house and I'm getting pretty good results except the master bathroom which is a little weak but still good enough to read the internet on the throne.

So the switch goes in your box (in the closet)

then you plug in one of the RJ45 ports to your router in a central location?
 
Here is my setup based on an IT friend's suggestion.  Modem and wireless router are in the great room.  one network wire connecting the wireless router is plugged into the cat-5 outlet back to the box , so only the switch is in the closet.  The cable modem should connected to an Internet router first. If you need more wired network port, then use one of the router network ports, and cascade to a network switch.

Did you buy the TP link wireless router or range extender?  I'd like to expand the signal on my nighthawk as well.

I bought this, a repeater not a router. Works very well and set was a breeze.

Same here, it was $20 a few weeks ago thru newegg, easy to use.

That Nighthawk has some serious range and you want to extend it even further?  You're trying to extend your signal all the way to the Floral Park aren't you? :)

Most of our activities are on the first floor, placing the Nighthawk in the greatroom, I have coverage in every corner of my house.  With Cox 25mps plan, I can still get 28-30 download / 6-8 upload speed on 2nd floor (over the extra insulation layer... :)) 
 
So I have this straight from the networking box in master closet.

1.  Install cable modem in closet and plug it into a switch (any switch will do?)

2.  Plug in router to any RJ45 jack around the house in preferred location.

Are there any special configs I need to do?
 
Depending on the wiring, you might need to redo the pinning on the ends to match either a 568-A and 568-B, which is super simple. Also the CAT5 end in the network box in the closet is usually hooked up directly to a telephone panel. So you'll likely have to pull them out and put them on an RJ45 connector so that you can plug it into the router/switch.

You will need to connect cable modem to the Router. Router will need to be connected to network switch. Connect all your Cat5 connections (going to different areas of your house) to the switch. Network switch come in different capacities. They may have 4, 8, 16 or 24 ports and you have to buy accordingly. This way you will have wired connections to all your areas.  If you don't have good wifi connection in some parts of your house, easiest thing is to add a range extender or router in AP mode.

 
And some people thought connecting the phone line to the dial-up modem was complicated.

The new homes come prewired with Cat 5 through the house.
