Grocery store cutbacks

I just talked to my friend who has over twenty years at Ralph's. About 120 out of store employees are being bumped back to the stores as their positions have been eliminated. This will have a domino effect and just about an equal number of employees at the lower levels will lose their jobs. Just add it to the tally of job losses.

The "Super Walmart's" or whatever they call them carry everything. I don't think we have one in OC (?), but they have them in Riverside county. Personally, I've never actually been in a Walmart but my mom shops there all of the time.

SuperWalmarts do. I used to sell grapes to them. There aren't many in California.

You don't need to drive all the way to a Super Walmart to save on groceries. There are many Hispanic markets in Santa Ana area, and Asian markets in Westminster area that have very competitive prices.

Check weekly specials at Superior Grocers:

This week, 10 lbs potatoes for $1.29, 8 lbs onions for $1, 8 lbs cabbage for $1, 3 lbs baby melons for $1, 4 lbs carrots for $1, canned corn $0.39, etc.

I guess if people were smart and actually connected to their neighbors in some way, they'd shop together and split up stuff like this. I know you are a pro shopper and chef so you probably find a way to use this much. It just goes bad around my house so I can't justify buying this much potatoes, onions or cabbage. Maybe this recession/depression will get people to start shopping a little smarter by teaming up.

Except for the potatoes (sold in pre-packaged bags), you could buy less for other items.

Once I was at this Mexican supermarket and they had these huge bags of carrots on sale. I briefly considered how many glasses of carrot juice I'd get out of it, then stopped myself silly.

Totally unrelated side note... at corner of 17th & Santa Ana in Costa Mesa/Newport, across the parking lot from Cafe Blanc, there's a meat market that sells some interesting collection of sausages. I usually give them the pass because their meat is expensive, but wandered in and saw Irish bangers in the sausage section (to the right of the regular meat section). I have yet to try these so cannot comment on quality.

With potatoes at 10 lbs for $1.29, I suppose you could make Bangers and Mash...

If you have a neighbor/friend who like you has a Costco card, good to go together to split stuff like this.
