I've been at places that give out "bad reviews" to people or "write up" people for minimal non-issues. I think some companies do it just to keep employees in check. I think some of them do it so that they have something documented in case they ever want to let an employee go in the future. They don't have a problem with the employee today, but if they want to let someone go in the future, it will be easier to do.
To answer your original question:
At my first salaried job, I was getting underpaid. I took the job with the promise that at the end of the year I would move from $30k to $50k. Well, the industry crashed and a couple of months before the end of the year it was announced that everyone's salaries were frozen and that nobody would see pay increases. I didn't quit. I asked for the raise and was turned down. Months later, traffic was really bad, and I got into the office 15 minutes late. I got a write up. Oh, I was pissed. They didn't need me during those 15 minutes. In order to avoid that sort of rare incident, I'd have to come in an hour early every day. No, not when I'm very underpaid. A month later, I resigned. The company begged for me to stay and then offered me $60k to stay. Unfortunately for them, my mind was already made up.
Anyhow, I put my heart and soul into my work. I know I can easily find a job paying 6 figures. One of my personal problems is that I'm pretty loyal and settle. I could probably move from job to job and get paid more, but I'd rather stay with the company I put my heart and soul into. If a company gave me a bad review or write up that I felt I didn't deserve, I'd consider moving on. I don't know if you have that sort of freedom. My only ball and chain is the ball and chain. The wife loves Irvine too much so whatever I do, it needs to be nearby. I personally would like to move to a lower cost area of the country.
